Just making sure. I am bringing both boats out Saturday morning. It will be the first time the Winston has hit the water since the rebuild. Have to break in the new motor. Also want to see what the Formula hydro is now capable of doing.

Once again thank you for sharing your pictures. The Nav. Regatta looked like it was a beautiful day at the lake and good turn out also.

WoodyBob The only problem is after two epic road trips this old back said "ENOUGH" and reminded me that as I get more aged that that many hours in the car is too many. Am just now returning to normal and the shop schedule has slipped again. But will do it again, just not this week!

The Pelican's maiden voyage - Gerry's new boat

Gerry <CPL.FUZZ> brought out his new boat for her maiden voyage;
an Artesania Latina 'Helen' fishing boat
that he has christened, with due ceremony, the "Pelican."

Yep just one of them days

Yeah just had one of those days all right. At least got my lid back.....and the rest of the day mostly was doing recovery ops for all the new gas boats and helping "sport" hold onto his boat while he was trying to get it started. May go tomorrow dunno depends on my mood. Anyone know who wants to get started into RC fast electrics? Just wondering cuz I would like to sell my SV27 which I just recently upgraded my motor to the UL1 motor and cooling jacket, selling without radio and receiver, so person has to buy radio tx/rx. Runs good as everyone knows when not flipping over LOL. Just want to sell because I want to get a cataraman. Spread the word $300 OBO!

List of upgrades:

2030kv motor (UL1 motor)
OSE Cooling jacket
Grimracer 3 bladed metal prop
60A lipo ready ESC
External water pickup conversion
4-Venom Lipo 2S 7.4V 30C packs

GREAT job on the model Gerry !
I wish I could have seen it, I took the dawn patrol, got there about 7:30 to get "quite time" pics., nice and foggy and calm ( though a BIG goose wanted to get aquainted with my Tug ! )
Unfortunatley I was called away about 9:30, was not able to stay long enough to see you guys ( I even brought doughnuts to go with the champagne ) ...
Looks like much better weather next weekend, hope to see everyone.

Hey thanks for the help cvctiger. I ended up having to buy a bigger starter for the Picco. Hopefully I can try to get it started this week so I won't have a huge problem with it on Saturday. I also found out why my Formula kept stalling, so I had to buy a new flex cable.

Hey everyone,
Does anyone have a power station so that I can run a hair dryer at the lake to heat the cylinder head for my Picco? I found out that if I heat the head before I try starting it, it should be really easy to get running.

I just started working on my Nitro TC3 as of Sunday after having it sit on shelf for 4 yrs. It still starts up and I just cleaned out the old shock oil and now I should be able to run. If you know of a place to run on Saturday Mr Lego I can drag race you LOL, but I still need better tires. UGH.

I just got new tires! However, I still need those rear differentials to come in... I'm not sure where we could drag race... give me a few days to think...

Doug No joy yet in the competetion area, but he has a pretty good excuse. When we got home he discovered a big problem with the house, it entailed tearing his shop to pieces, doing a bunch of repairs and then putting everything back together plus some big bucks spent. Hoping to get her going more frequently now that is all complete. have been using the barge a bit with my Southampton(mini Wyeforce) and made a trip to Riverside. But she is in a good home and will be a force to reckon with. Future plans are metal props, more horsepower and lots of practise. Looking for a Switch 8 or 16 for multifunctions at the present. Other stuff in hand so the neverending quest goes on.

From the looks of it there are too many things going on tomorrow there.
There is the Bluegrass concert and a soccer game and a submarine thing going on at the casting ponds. There will be little to no parking this weekend there anyways. So I am going next week......

CRAIG C whatever happened to having the pics from the previous Night run?

Mr Lego Unknown what evil lurks in the mind of the PSO, but figure if his fishing boat can do it mine can. There will be rod and reels available so Tug boats and others can say they are going fishing, so no one is excluded. come on out and find the answer to your question with the rest of us.

Hey guys. If you did not make it to the Casting Pond this last weekend you missed out on a great run. The subs are something to see, they build boats that SINK!!!! don't understand it. Was on vacation on the Russian River for a coupl days and took two of my boats, the Catherine and my new boat, Pelican and ran them in the river.

I drove up to the barrier at the intersection of JFK Drive and Chain of Lakes Drive a bit west of the Bison Paddock and told them I had to get to the Sub Regatta at the Casting Ponds. The gate folks knew about the event and there were arrangements for regatta participants to drive in and park along JFK.

When in doubt, ask...

Go out to the end of the jetty/breakwater where the "wave organ" is to take your pictures. I wanted to get out there last year but wasn't able to. Vspeed got some fantastic photos from there last year! Here's a map... Maybe I will see you there.

Thought the anti-noise nazi's had cried loudly enough to have to Angels not come this year. I had also read that if they did manage to get to fly the high speed passes would also be prohibited.

It is always nice to see the Blues turning our tax dollars into noise (and AN AWSOME SHOW!).

cvctiger,
Bummer about your pics. That's a great lens. Hopefully you could get good shots again.

I was out there Friday but not quite at the wave organ but in the SFYC parking lot. I brought my camera but didn't take many pictures. I just enjoyed the show.

Hopefully I can make it down to the lake soon and join you guys.

Congrats - Nice shot!!! Shots!

-- - - - --

Went out to the Wave Organ at the end of the point today and spent time. While the poor crabs didn't seem too thrilled with all the two-legs hanging out on their turf, it was a very nice day; just the right balance of sun and a cooling wind for shirt sleeves and no jacket!

Visibility was not as good today as yesterday. In addition to the strong haze and brown smog, which had gotten worse, the fog came into The Bay a bit, so that messed up viability as well, though the extra moisture in the air made for nice shock fronts on the jets when they were allowed to pick it up.

Anyway, I'm in the process of downloading the pictures now... gonna take a while - 25megs X 780 images. I will get them up if you guys are interested, though I gotta say these floatey thingies in the water kept getting in front of my lens... I don't suppose anyone is interested in seeing pictures of them

Might be a couple of days - have a couple of other things pressing and I am going to shoot the regatta at Spreckels tomorrow as well. Woot!

One thing to note though, if you are going to have high-speed gas / electric boats on your pond, I would not recommend the type of edging we have here at Spreckels Lake. If a boat, such as a tunnel hull, fast cat or even a big deep-V like the Apache moving at a high-speed hits the side of The Lake, depending on how fast they are going, they could go airborne and come right up out of the water and sail across the foot path.

This is why there is a City Law restricting speed on The Lake and why the Club and the Irregulars both recommend that boats capable of high-speed cut their speed back to near-idle (just enough to make steerage and headway) withing 32 feet / 10 meters or so from any lake edge and has a 50 foot / 15 meter zone in front of our powerboat staging/pit area which is slow-speed only.

It would probably be safer if there was at least a 8-inch / 20 centimeter or more vertical difference between the edge of the walkway surrounding the lake and the surface of the water. Admittedly his would be a bit harsh for out of control boats (being smashed into a solid wall) but it is a better outcome than having someone injured by a flying or skidding boat. (Yes, this has happened.)

One feature that seems to be well liked at other facilities is a deep launching pit where the boats can be launched. Here is an example from the casting ponds near Spreckels Lake. I will post some more over on your Building a pond/pool for r/c boats thread. I also believe Umi already mentioned the launch area takahasgi-san photographed as well although his looks like a small dam or retaining wall.

If I was to start building a model boating lake from scratch, I think that I would take a lot from the Golden ate Park Casting Ponds as well as Spreckels Lake, not the least of which are the sides, a much larger, deep pit launching area, steps out into the water and the fact that the water is kept clear (a REALLY big plus)!!

Did you get your photos back? if not try a data recovery program called photorec it's free and works good. then it the files don't open or are corrupt get jpegsnoop (also free) and it can rebuild them.

good luck

Thanks for the tip, I will keep that in mind next time. Those picks were average compared to what I took the following day anyways. I posted a whole bunch in my album on Webshots.com

Well, as you may see from Bob SF's post over on his rebuild thread , today was a very good day for model boaters at The Lake. The weather absolutely excellent and not a lot of wind on The Lake's surface to blow the ships about on the course while the jets that were participating in the Fleet Week air-show periodically whirled and swirled over our heads.

The only irritant was that it's pollen season for some of the trees around the lake, that combined with wind direction, pushed all the green pollen scum over into our power run area and everyone's boat got a bit slimed! Ah-well...

Even so a very fun time was had by all. The course was fun and our devious PSO Aerominded came up with another twist or two for the competition based on some concepts he saw on the Deadliest Catch cable show, which definitely livened things up and kept the Captains on their toes!

I'll post pictures as I get them sorted and edited. I have a couple of things in front of them, but I am working to get them posed as quickly as possible.

Pictures are posted here...

They never said interference with 2.4ghz radios were impossible, they said it will be very unlikely which is possible.
I think its why Spektrum came out with their DSMX line. Since most of us are going to 2.4Ghz, they came out with something that is a little more "bulletproof."

Harold Hasselbach, <Cannonman> one ot the regular Irregulars of Spreckels Lake had a rather interesting experience on Sunday. As he recounts here, he lost the GoPro Hero camera off his boat. The camera was still recording when Aerominded fished it out about a half an hour later with the club's net. Harold posted the video on youtube.

Here it is for your viewing enjoyment...

Boat loses GoPro Camera (1 min 11 sec)

(thank you Harold for posting the video (and for the kind words of your post)).

LAST 2011 NIGHT RUN OF THE YEAR (Hosted by the "Irregulars"

Last night run before the 2011 year ends. thats hosted by the "irregulars"
So this night run is going to be October 26th, 2011. It is a Wednesday. From the way I see it, it seems like we’ll be meeting at about 6:15pm at Spreckels Lake. The theme of this night run will be “Haunted Night” where you may decorate your boats with a haunted theme. There is no prize, and this is not in any way a competition. I will have candy available if any of you guys want any. This is not an optional potluck like the last run as that didn't turn out to well since only a few people brought food to share.
So… start putting those lights on and put some Halloween decorations on your boats and prepare for October 26th, 2011!
I will also send out a reminder 1 week before the event just as a reminder.
I hope you guys will make it! Especially the guy with SFPD MLB boat! haha

Again, yes... its the last night run the "irregulars" are hosting for 2011. The next planned one is estimated around late January, early February.

Thanks everyone who shared their pics of boats at the lake and Fleet Week. It was cool to actually see an aircraft carrier in the bay with squadrons of planes aboard...makes me wonder why the Navy opted to leave the planes aboard going into the bay.

No where to put the aircraft unless they flew them all the way to Travis AFB (is it still open?), all the NAS's in that area are closed, would have taken too long (and you have to have ground people to take care of the planes too) to get them back aboard if the carrier has to scramble out of there. Plus which, far down on the consideration factors also, is that this is fleet week and the air guys have money to spend (good for the economy) and San Fran still has decent liberty.

@ Foo...

The Marine jets, the V-22 as well as the AF Strike Eagle and the Angels all transited to the airshow venue up from the south along and just off The Coast. I think I remember the announcer saying that the Angels and Fat Albert were sortieing out of SFO and staying at one of the big hotels near there (an event sponsor - Man, you should have heard the plugs!! A good quarter of the yak!). The B2 transited from her base in the mid-west.

While I know Moffet used to have and may still have the facilities and definitely has the runways, it's now under NASA AMES management and is shared with the Cal Air National Guard and an Army PsyOps unit. I don't think it's being used for the visitors. That's probably why the aircraft didn't sortie to shore and stayed on the carrier, nowhere to put the toys except Travis combined with the short stay. (Yes, Travis is still there, but Onazuka (Lockheed Bldg 100) ceased operations last month, IIRC.)

Since the Nixon base closures, one of the largest concentrations of military personnel and facilities have been almost entirely decommissioned and for the most part closed including the only deep water shipyard on the central West Coast, Hunter's Point. Betch'cha with the rise of China, we are going to really miss the Point, Mare Island and Alameda NAS.

If they had to surge, LOL, they were either anchored mid-channel or along the Embarcadero... the only thing holding them back would have been collecting their personnel. If not for that, they probably could have cleared The Gate within an hour or so after the word came down. What a sight that would have been. (May we NEVER have to see it happen!)

Bob SF's beautiful rebuild/conversion of a friend's 1920 vintage boat.

Club member Bob_SF brought out a very special boat built by a friend's father as child in the 1920's.
Bob spent the last month or so rebuilding and converting this classic commuter-style "school boat"
to R/C for his friend.

Sunday, at the Fish Boat Gambler Regatta, was her second maiden voyage with a
new powerplant, R/C gear & electronics plus a new paint job and other repairs.

For more information about Hinky Dinky and her rebuild, Bob's thread is here...

If a 2.4ghz system is working properly, glitching in the traditional sense is impossible. They use a digitally encoded signal, and the RX shouldn't be doing anything unless it successfully decodes the message (sent many times per second). If it can't decode without errors, it simply rejects it and waits for the next input. The only way a digital system will glitch is if the RX is trying to partially decode and use bad inputs (noisy, errors, partial transmission, etc).

Since they also use a paired key/ID to link the TX/RX, only the RX(s) bound to the TX will respond.

You *could* end up with two TX's from the same manufacturer that generated the same key/ID, but in that case both RX's would be listening to both TX's and any inputs would make both RX's respond. It's VERY unlikely due to the length of the key/ID, and it wouldn't be like normal glitching, it would be like someone had full control of your model.

DSMX is only an extension of DSM2 to allow more systems to be used at the same time at an event. It doesn't add any new features beyond the maximum number of systems.

Lest I stray too far into the political ramblings....the far left (see most bay area pols) have never loved the Navy cluttering their bay, the air over it, and the water under it. Alameda and Moffet were going to die due to air congestion with SFO and Oakland anyways. Alameda's runways were also too short for bigger aircraft (F-4's) Mare Island died due to lack of work, and Hunters Point due to (again) the far left politics. I find it funny to watch Diane Feinstein and comrade Pelossi who both campaigned that Treasure Island, Alameda, Mare Island, the Moffet housing area, would all be turned into low income housing areas for comparatively little money and have now discovered that TI is unusable, Alameda housing couldn't meet modern building codes on a bet and no one wants to live in Mare Island (the mosquitoes come out in clouds) and Moffet (too far away from San Fran) are untennable. An exemption for the Alameda housing area building codes, resulted in discovering one of the largest superfund cleanup sites on the west coast there, OOPS!

I spent two years living in Alameda and the only level house on 'Captain's Row (where all the ship commanders lived, some 30 houses)' was the one story replacement that had burned down in the 50's. The rest all had some tilt to one side or the other (ours to front left of the house, if you dropped anything you just went to front left corner of the room to go get it. Refinished hard wood floors in that corner had twice the coating on them due to that tilt). The houses were built in the 40's on 6 inch concrete slab foundations and they discovered that the sand bar that is Alameda Island doesn't react well to large houses on slab foundations.

The gray area decided that they didn't like the military (or their money) and threw them out...gee shucks, sorry bout that have a nice life!

Thats what made me wonder why all the aircraft remained on board. In the past the aircraft always went to Lemoore and San Diego area for SF Fleet Week and I'm sure that was for political reasons.

I'm just wondering if it was a tactical/deployment option due to world events. Looking at the force protection detail a lot of assets were committed for security, way more in the past and all that equals more cost and planning. Just me thinking weirdly.

Anyway I hope to make it the irregulars night run.

And thanks Craig again for sharing your pics. Sometimes I wish I lived a little closer.

Hey Kev - confirm me there with the 41 and 47 foot MLB Coast Guard.
I'll see if I can get Joel to come too (41 MLB).

If V-Speed makes it we'll have a great photo op representing police, medical, and coast guard.

Craig, charge the camera and grab a new memory stick!

You need to remember that there is a Nite Run scheduled in Dec. also. Figure will not make this one, but have a good time.

I'll see if I can get Joel to come too (41 MLB).

If V-Speed makes it we'll have a great photo op representing police, medical, and coast guard.

Craig, charge the camera and grab a new memory stick!

YAY!!! this night is looking very promising for our 4 MLBs coming together!

Yes, I remember there is a night run in December, its why I'm hosting the "irregulars" one now so there isn't the pressure to choose later.

RIP to Ken's outrigger for the mishap on Sat morning. Another casualty weekend following my broken rudder on my Offshore Warrior, Racer59 stuck throttle(still was able to control his boat to safety) along with an unknown regular who lost a prop on his tunnel hull. Efforts were made to rescue his sunken ship from my rescue tug to Gerry and Ken taking the SFMYC dingy into the lake and using the net to try to locate and fish it out. Too bad Mr Lego wasn't there I'm sure he would have dove in. Anyways it is still somewhere in the depths. Hopefully word spreads and some other kind SFMYCer can try and fish it out...location facing Fulton St to right of the orange marker buoy inside a 400 sq ft area.

I'd most likely not dive in, but I sure would have been glad to help try to locate it! We should try to locate it again this weekend.
