The Lake is a public lake and is open to all, you do NOT have to be a member of the SFMYC to sail any type of boat on Spreckels Lake, though the run times for gas-powered boats are limited by Rec and Park Department rules to between the hours of 10am through 1pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. More here and here The SFMYC Sail Squadron has races scheduled for most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as well as most Saturday and Sunday afternoons and have right-of-way. On the power side, the most prolific users of the lake are the 'Irregulars,' a loose association of individual model electric and gas power boaters who run on the Lake on a nearly daily basis, and who are not associated with the SFMYC. |

Hi Craig, I've been watching the weather here (in Sonoma) since about 6am just waiting for it to clear so I can get to my truck but it's been horrible. And I'm like a cat, hate to get wet. Battling a cold doesn't help that it's raining (or that there are high winds). I think it's safe to say I'm gonna save on gas and a bridge fair today. I hope it's mello enough over there to get a few runs in without the high seas claiming boats!!!
Keep us updated on what were missing! (

Dude! Youz missed a real fun, if somewhat soggy and cold event... Typical San Francisco summer weather !! I had really been looking forward to seeing your harbor setup! More photos to come in a while, but in the meantime... Listen, Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain Pitter patter pitter patter, Oh Listen, listen to the falling rain... |

Oh Man!!! That tanker is awesome. I knew I would miss some things but that was unexpected. However, judging from the rain, I wouldn't have been able to drop the tug in which would have been even more painful- my deck isn't rain water tight yet.
![]() On the brighter side, since I was just sitting at home staring looking at my boat wondering what else I could modify, I decided to rip out the smoker box and make it better so that's where I'm at with that. A bunch of pieces lying around on a work bench. ![]() I guess it was better than looking at my truck- that would have been nasty.

(Yes, it was) Depite the rain, we had a good number of boats and willing captains show up, some travelling from as far away as the Central Valley and Southern California to make the event happen! Even though we were all soggy, we had a great time and proved that our working boats work- even on rainy days!
It wasn't really raining that hard... was it?
(Yes, it was) It was raining that hard. Just walking from my car to the tents soaked my jeans and shoes for the whole day! Even though I had to leave early I had a great time. Thanks. |

Thanks for bringing your fantastic new tug, "Vspeeds"- you did a super job building it!
Thanks Aerominded. If I only new how to drive it with a barge that would be even better! I think one of the issues I was having was the mixing adjustments. I'm thinking about changing to tank steering for more accurate control. |

The 6'er may have been a better fit than the 7'er... CaptLee can provide a more exact number but I think the 7'er is around 250Lbs (probably more)... that's a lot of barge and the weather wasn't the best!
Let me know the next time you can make it to the lake with "Vspeeds", we can get a barge in the water for you to practice with!

A couple of the upcoming shots of VSpeed's new Southampton tug both onshore and on the course.
Sorry the shots are touch 'soft.' (No, I haven't been to the Bob Guccione School of Fine Art Photography recently) as far as I can tell some water vapor got inside my lens... that lens is probably gonna have to shipped off to repair soon! sigh ![]() Was it wet?? Check out the open cabin doors of Vspeed's tug. He built them open so you could have an unobstructed view into the wheelhouse and see all the marvelous detail work he had done there; maps, books, radios, a case of Pepsi® and a calendar opposite a cute pin-up!. The rain was coming down so hard he had to put transparent tape over both open doors to keep it out so it would not ruin everything! As I said, more to come of Vspeed's meticulous build on and off the course...

Damn good question! Glad you asked that, Tim!
AEROMINDED!!!! Actually, I believe that life boat 14 gets shoved out onto the Lake quite a distance, then you and your boat must quickly 'rescue' Sailor Bill and the Maidens from their dire fates on that deserted tropical isle where the soothing trade winds blow warm and moist through tall palm trees standing sentinel shading fine white sand beaches where, in the gentle surf, the flying fish play all day as it laughs and gurgles its way ashore over the sand and amongst verdant mango groves... Or maybe Areo has something else in mind.... |

Went out to Spreckels Lake last Saturday to see what type of gas boats were running and really met a great group of people. Got to see all the beautiful boats that were in the club (I was the moron carrying the dog during your meeting. Sorry guys). Can't wait to get my Winston Eagle Lobster boat back and get it out there. Also renewed my NAMBA membership. So I can get out to Fremont and race. But also for insurance purposes. Can never be too safe.

They are mostly race boats. We are talking about boats that hit mid 50 to 60 mph. You have to be a member of NAMBA and a member of the Model Mariners. I am trying to go through the process of joining their club now. But head on over to Spreckels Lake. I was just out there last Saturday for my first time and everyone was exceptionally nice. Great boats!

Fathers' Day Weekend!
Man did you guys miss a beautiful couple of days on the Lake... bright and warm (79 degrees (Sunday)) with a nice wind for the sailboats, both afternoons...
Dad, GrandPa and the kids spend a sunny afternoon together at Spreckels Lake with his Victoria sailboats. (Grandpa is a regular with his Victoria on the Lake) More to come! |

What is he using for power in his lobster boat? I also have the midwest ARR lobster boat and I'm trying to dial it in. P.S. I learned that when any water gets on the deck of that boat it drains into the bilge where the Fiberglass hull and wood deck meet. I carry a sucker and I tilt the boat to get the water to drain back through the gap and I suck it all out.

Catchthis Bjorn is running a stock motor with a Prop Shop 4 blade vintage prop. I have one also with the same prop but a 65 turn Integy lathe motor, because my favorite 55 turn made the spray do just as you said in the cockpit. Bjorn uses a 7 cell battery and gets the same results as my engine change.

New Boat on the Lake.
Gerry, one of the the Irregulars who is also now member of the Club, brought his new boat to the Lake on Saturday. He said that he was going to wait 'til Sunday to christen her and put her on the Lake... as you can see, he just couldn't wait the 24 hours for "Tootles" to get her sea legs.
Gerry says he always wanted a "toy" boat and now he has "Tootles the Tug." We will see more of Tootles later. |

Thank you, was a bit rough that day for the Whip but it also helped me keep the speed down.

Here's a little something to think upon... The puzzle will come together with the posting of Sunday the 26th's pictures. For now, just take note in the background of a these shots the family and the little girl who loves pink.

Sunday, June 26th...
Sunday the 26th was another beautiful day and there was a nice surprise, Don and a buddy brought two of the vintage boats that have been in the Club for over 50 years. Had some other nice surprises happen as well.
In the afternoon the Sail Squadron held the fourth in its series of 36-R races.

Well the Park Gods have thrown another Monkey wrench into the works. Tomorrow the S.F. Marathon is on and so you will have to park on Fulton and walk in. Will setup on the North side someplace and see who gets in. Titanic Rescue is ON for the moment.

I think youre thinking of Sunday Streets? But no worries, after weeks of exchanging emails and constant negotiations, the organizers of Sunday Streets have agreed to allow entrance to those who are trying to access the lake or the dog park through 36th Avenue and Fulton. This means we could park along the north (Spreckels Lake Dr) and west (36th Ave) sides of the lake, not our usual south (JFK) side. of course, the road closures are only applies to those who are coming in about after 10:30am. The event duration is 11am-4pm. yup, no need to thank me, just save me a good parking space next to the lake. =) |

Not really new, just never interfered with Spreckels activities til now.
Must have missed April 10, surprised it wasn't rained out! Last year it involved only the Great Highway and part of Lincoln Way for bikes. http://www.sundaystreetssf.com/ Just another obstacle to having a good time in Golden Gate Park. Get out there early for any parking spaces available. Add this to plans for next year. Back when the comedy day was held at the polo fields, I had to park on Fulton and walk about four blocks... Good luck to all dedicated sailors tomorrow! |
