Just realized that this picture was of my Ivan Mono running a little loose captured by Craig lol. I was testing a different prop and strut height....obiviously it didn't work out well but boat is fine after the big splash.

I remember you turning to me afterwards stating you caught it. Awesome photograph!

Well guys, it's been a nutso last couple'a weeks... further behind the eight-ball than ever in the photos dept. My wife had major surgery Tuesday, so I've been up at the hospital a lot and she is going to need a fair amount of after-care when she comes home sometime next week. Other stuff has been moved to the back burner.

I will try to get pictures of Saturday is Opening Day / Ragtop-Stinkpot Regatta and get them up in about a week. The previous stuff, I'll have to pick a few and post them a bit later.

Thanks Dave and everyone else! I appreciate the kudos, and it is nice to be appreciated, that is for sure.

I've been so tied-up I haven't even seen the final offset copies of the tri-fold, looking' forward to that this weekend.

Always appreciate someone setting me up for a fun action shot! Thanks!! Yours wasn't the only one that day so that shot will have some company as soon as I am able to get them prepped and posted.

Ran across this in my email in-box this morning...

Figured I'd keep it local The boat is down in Monterey, so special attn to the central coast guys. (yeah, Areo, I mean you )

Last of the 'hen's teeth;' an honest-to-godz Vortex Santa Barbara Kit, still in the factory box with (what looks like) all the fixin's!!

So.... Who got the Santa Barbara??? Anyone of us??? (I didn't... But I will say it went for about the same price as an assembled one back in the 70s. Seriously killer deal!!)

And Ken, thanks for posting those craigslist postings; that big yacht sure is tempting!!!! Drool!

Had a few minutes to kill, checked out Craigslist. There is a Newport 12 listed. There was one listed about a month ago. I suspect that this might be the same model. Last one was listed at $700, this listing is $900. I did a phone # lookup, and the sellers phone # is from Ukiah.

The add can be seen here..

Tim It is for the Power Squadron and if it turns good it is in the running. The Coral Reef with the inlay belongs to J. Garis who is a longtime member.

LONG DRIVE from Oakland, Tim???!

I traveled from Michigan to see an event on Spreckels Lake!
http://matthewsmodelmarine.wordpress...nd-boat-float/

(and I used to commute between Walnut Creek and Oakland on 24 thru the tunnel... that can be a long drive!)

Tim may be referring to the time vs distance factor of driving in the Bay Area when he said "long". Last time I was in the Area, it took 3 hours to go 20 miles up the east side from San Jose to Richmond. Bicycle would have been faster, if I had the legs.

The Boat Handling Challenge is a set of "obstacles" that you drive through which are designed to "test" various boat handling skills... Docking, backing, turning in tight quarters, etc. the words "challenge" and "test" are used but it is really just supposed to be fun.

P.S. gtopillado, I have a brass plaque to give to you for placing in the Navigator Regatta last year...

Hope to see you there!

Was out at The Lake for a few minutes in the afternoon to check a couple of measurements and things for the new power squadron stanchions. The 36R free-sail squadron was out running heats and it was indeed a warm and very beautiful afternoon at The Lake!

If you can get there earlier than noon, I 'd really, really recommend it though as you might miss a lot of the fun!

Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow

Yep, we start at 9:30 and you would be welcomed to enter one of your boats in the event to see how you like it. We may be winding down by noon depending on how many participate.

Yes, we have no videos today! ( Jeeze, some folks!! Ya givz 'em nice, purty pictures and the next thing ya know they wantz cinemascope and technicolor movies in 3D with Sensurround no less!!! )

Seriously, the club does not have a video camera and the rest of the folks are either running boats or running the contest. The photographer (moi) has to concentrate on shooting, not being in the event. A couple of folks (not the club) are trying to find a solution. One person has proposed putting up a web camera up in one of the trees so we can have a live-cam view on the web-site.

And no, currently I don't have a usable video camera or video-enabled DSLR either.

I am currently also trying to figure out how to piggy back my GoPro onto the barrel of my long lenses as a way of getting videos, but no joy on that front yet.

Day on The Lake

Morning Craig C, just wanted to say I had a great time at The Lake, it was good to meet you and Aerominded. lots of great boats and good people ! we were very fortuntate with the weather, one of those gambling days at the west end of GG park when ANYTHING could happen with the weather. I also was very lucky to sell my unbuilt Artesia Latina Hellen, which was why I went this time.
Looking forward to the next event.
Thanks for all you do for us !

Einar's Tigger in a Kayak

Sunday brought a surprise in the form of another of the boats that Einar designed, this time a kayak.

While I did not get a chance to see the mechanism and get detail shots, I will try to get some the next time that 'Tigger' comes to the Lake for a good paddle.

The oars are strictly power, steering is accomplished with a hidden rudder.

Very cool what I did see though. Hope this inspires some of you guys thinking of anthropomorphic propulsion systems.

This young man, his Mom and Grandmother came out to the Lake so he could run his new boat.

Boy, did he get a surprise. After gawking and looking for awhile, he asked if he could run his boat too... of course (after checking he freq board...) he could!

Anyway, just remember guys, that people his age are probably more excited about running a little RTR than we are running a 80" scale model! It's their first, not their tenth or twentieth. Threat them with care, what future our hobby has begins here!

03 April 2011 - a flock of Wheeler Yachts

A bevy of beautiful Wheeler class yachts descended on the Lake in the afternoon to spend he day racing on its yacht course.

Only one is skippered by an SFMYC member.

Note on the "So Long" (the green boat, number 8), the little orange video camera system mounted on the deck. Wonder how those videos came out!

Great coverage and it's great to see some of the "irregular" tug guys out there as well. That Jim Wilder has an interesting back story to it... anyone notice something different about it?

No, the kit did not have a funnel neither did the 1:1 to my knowledge.

The hull is oversized. That is Lou's - his kit model slipped silently beneath the waves one day numerous theories abound, he blames the rear hatch. Everything but side-scanning sonar was uses but the only part recovered was the cabin which you see there. He had saved the remaining frame sheets and used them as templates to sketch out new ones then enlarged them slightly so now he has a supersized Wilder.

Aerominded,
I started building back in late October. With a little work here and a little work there I projected a year for the build...until I saw the SFMYC schedule of events. For the past month pretty much all my little free time I had was put into building the tug. I'll see you at the tug fest.

Electric and Stream can run on the Lake at anytime, but generally, you may find the Irregular scale guys out there on Monday, Wednesday or Fridays. Otherwise they share the pit area with the big go-fastie gas boats. The only days that you'll find Power Squadron members running, guaranteed, are the posted contest days.

Play nice Hog, or we'll send one of the Lake's "Cthuthlu Carp" east for a visit Ask Aero, he was dragging some model hooks from his fishing boat, Summer Winds, IIRC, one time... something came up from the depths and almost 'caught' the boat.

Hog The only problem to your buoy dragging is that each gate is two buoys with 20 oz. anchors and a spacer bar. My Springer cannot move one let alone two. The dingy is the only game in town. When it is time to pick them up we are always looking for some help, but if you cannot pull them in, plan on lots of razzing from the peanut gallery. Aero and myself are working on a trolling motor for the dingy, so the peanut gallery comments on our rowing skills will be lessened.

The speed that the skiff is going in the first pic is all due "Sea Horse" which has the skiff in tow. The oar was over the side to give the skiff some directional stability only! "Sea Horse" is based on a Mr. Darby hull... I'd say it has a fair amount of power!

Oh, the weather today at the Lake was to die for!!!!

80 degrees (F), very little wind an nary a cloud!!

Forecast for Saturday: Mid 60s and partially sunny, so figure maybe a bit of early morning overcast(onshore fog) that'll burn off about mid-day. Looking like it'll be a good one!

Hi Craig,

Do you know anything about the Day of Gray regatta scheduled for July 3? I can spread the word through my site, Warship Models Underway, but just wanted to check to make sure it is still on, since I cannot find much about it so far.

Hi Kurt.
Yep, it is still on, the schedule has not changed. More than that, I will let Aero, our Power Squadron Officer, discuss.

Hi Lee!,

I hope you are well. If you would like people to attend from out of the area, we need to get the word out at least a couple of months ahead of time, especially for a first time event. We don't need a formal flyer or anything, just the bare details for postings on various websites.

The SFMYC "Day of Gray" will be on Sunday, July 3rd at Spreckels Lake in SF starting at 0930.

The event will be a "mission themed" navigation course designed for military vessels with consideration given to the handling characteristics of ships used in the WWCC, for example. (I know they don't handle like small tugs! )

The mission will not involve 'live fire' so there will be no need to bring or to fear flying BB's.

Details of the mission will not be disclosed until the day of the event to keep the enemy off guard.

All model military vessels of any scale are welcomed to participate.

Refreshments will be provided.

Hope to see you there.

Success in this event will depend on good
communication between skippers ensuring that turns are coordinated, speed is properly adjusted and of course, making sure to stay ahead of the boats so that adequate room is left for mark roundings! If the overlap between boats is broken, the team must start over again. There will be a time limit for each team to complete the course.
Should be a lot of fun!

ROV Yacht Builder to be at May Meeting.

John Lampe, builder of the RX class ROV yacht, “Sea Witch,” that made such a splash at Wooden Boats on Parade 2010 will be returning with his yacht for a special presentation on her and the special technology used in her construction and instrumentation during the May meeting.

In addition to the Witch’s long range radio control systems which Mr. Lampe, a licensed ham radio operator, said can function at a distance of “tens of miles,“ her onboard systems include a real-time, first person point-of-view (FPoV) camera, multiple channels of real time telemetry overlaid onto the video feed, data recorders, Wi-Fi transceiver, and GPS navigation.

Mr. Lampe recently told Commodore Heacock that the boat, as currently configured, could be sailed on Spreckels Lake through our competition course with perfect accuracy in real time by a remote skipper in New York or London.

Tim, that cat got out of the bag years ago.

FPoV R/C aircraft with ranges of 50 plus miles have been flying in Europe for years. (All hail "Trappy"...) Did you think Predator wouldn't give people ideas? In the final analysis, all the Predator is, is a glorified R/C drone with real secure data and control links and teeth. I think it could be seriously argued that amateur long range R/C was around long before Predator got overly glorified press coverage.

You should checkout some of the long range / FPoV threads that the aircraft boys are posting – wow! The equipment certainly isn’t that expensive. There's even a local bunch it seems.

It's not like there is any big (or little) secret in building and flying (or sailing) long range R/C or self-guided (auto-pilot) systems with or without FPoV nor does it take an engineering degree or special licenses to do it. It's just not everyone is doing it...

As for build-it-yourself. self-guided systems - that guy down in New Zealand did that years ago with the DIY Cruise Missle; man's got to have a hobby... or two. Now it's standard, easily available, off-the-shelf, hobby components, many made in China.

The cat is definitely looooong gone....

See everyone tomorrow at The Lake.

I didn't know they had a boat set up at the makers faire. I really wanted to go and now i really regret not going. The Orca is a really cool boat and ive never seen the model warships before. It looks like aerominded was there having fun also. I had tickets to go but i just couldn't make the 240 mile round trip journey because i had to be back in Elk Grove by 7pm. Oh well. The event looked pretty cool.

Darn! You and SFPD Marine 1 would have been a big hits, not only on the water, but in the display area as well. Let's plan for next year!

Tim That wasn't MARGIE, it was the boat that was cloned during the rebuild. Cannot remember what her name is but the builder said it was easier to build a new one than the rebuild of MARGIE.

Original

Fascinating Captain !
So, is the original not brought out maybe ? it would be quite old and frail by now I guess ( built in the 40's, yes ? ) ...
Maybe I will get to see the clone at the lake ....
Gasser, like the original, I imagine ?
A big quad would sound cool pushin that beast around ....

Tim,

Margie was rebuilt and runs beautifully, thanks to the hard work of Don Ciucci, Ken Valk and John Garis. It has been on the lake a few times and is not at all frail, just temperamental as anyone her age deserves to be.

Maybe we'll get to see her on the lake sometime soon.

She would not have liked the pond at the MakerFaire. Too small to appreciate her.

By the way, Great Job by Bob Heacock and the rest of our guys and the warship crowd to promote the hobby. Wish I'd have had more time to spend at the "pond", but too much to see at the Faire. Definitely a two day show, if the legs can hold out.
