FLEET DAY Details, Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Place: Spreckels Lake, Golden Gate Park, south shore
Time: Try to arrive and be all set up before 10:00 AM

Vessels: All military vessels, all scales, are welcome. The event centers around a maneuvering challenge, for which 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will win brass plaques. At the same time, the area outside the course will be open to fun run activities.

Food and drink: This will be a potluck, so bring something to add to the larder (drinks, chips, cookies, hot dogs, buns, condiments, etc.)

Weather forecast: Mostly sunny, light breezes expected.

State of the Lake: no weeds growing, and no floating algae. SFMYC's dingy will be on hand for recovery, and clubhouse and restroom facilities will be open.

Best Regards,

Great day on the lake!

5 SBOD's held off-season SBOD "beer-can" Race 1 today. Next SBOD beer-can Race 2 is November 10 following the membership meeting (during the swap-meet).

Light winds in the early races gave way to a gentle breeze towards the end making it a t-shirt day in GG Park(?!)....Who's got it better than that?! (Go Niners!)

Reminder: SBOD off-season "beer-can" racing is not sanctioned with no fees, food or prizes. Some of us need an SB hit once a month during the off season. 5 SB's were great but we're looking for 6 7 8 9 10. More are more better (sic)!

A big shout-out to Stephen, Bob & Jim with a special thanks to Ryan for the help dialing in 443's rigging. Some day 443 will lead the pack-Ha!

SB's out there, the pond is open-join us!

It was a fun weekend....

It was a fun weekend - everyone had a bang-up time at the 'Fleet Day' military regatta.

Pictures to follow as I get 'em done.

The swap meet will follow our very abbreviated club general meeting- I would expect the tables to go up @11:15-11:30 am, in the clubhouse.

Hope to see you there!

In addition to the meeting & swap-meet, note- SB skippers when finished selling/buying at the swap meet may want to join the off-season SBOD "beer-can" (pick-up) race #2 Nov. 10th, 1-3pm (six races planned). Race #1 had 5 SBs. So, we're looking for #6 7 8 9 10+ this time. Make it a big day-go to the membership meeting then buy/sell @ the swap-meet capping it off with SB "beer-can" racing. Its all good!

Sub Committee Mare Island - 2012 West Coast Sub Fun Run

The SubCommittee's Mare Island, California squadron once again hosted their yearly "West Coast Fun Run"
at the Western Casting Pond in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park over the weekend of the 20/21 of October.

Since this event was hosted by SubCommittee Mare Island, not the SFMYC and mainly
for the submariner community, the pictures are posted over in the Submarine Forum.

Given that the normal Club (business) Meeting does not usually break up until about noon and the Club's Board Meeting doesn't even start until at least 09:30 - the swap meet will probably get underway sometime after 12:30 or 1pm given the time necessary to clear the chairs and everything from the meeting and setup the tables.

Craig, as you saw, I worked around the conflicting scheduling. Waiting to set up and run the swap meet until after the general meeting, and after some sort of break for lunch while the sailboat guys are prepping their boats for a 1:00 PM race, is simply not practical. The silent auction made it possible for people to bid on items without disturbing the meetings, and for the swap meet to end in time for the race prep. Unless the powers that be stop me, I'm going to schedule next year's swap meet exactly the same way. Just FYI.

Rob,
It worked perfect-three hits and no outs. (:
Two meetings, Swap-meet +unofficial off-season SB "beer-can" race #2! That was my first SFMYC Swap-Meet and it was great. Nice planning. Nice "stuff" on tables. Good prices. Next time I'll bring more "lunch money" for eye-candy. Bring it on!

unofficial SB off-season "beer-can" race #2

Thanks to the skippers of 7 SBs who joined the 2nd unofficial off-season "beer-can" race.

Light winds, clear skies and t-shirt weather made for an excellent day on the lake. A nice feature of unofficial off-season "beer-can" races is the relaxed atmosphere among skippers.

SB newbies (the author & friends) sometimes hand our Tx to a SB top gun to help fine-tune the newbie's rigging. And, there's nothing quite as sobering as a newbie at the helm of the top guns fastie to reveal a lack of skipper skills. How better to bring newbies along than off-season "beer-can" racing with seasoned skippers?

So, more practice is more better for more newbies with more fasties. We do have our eyes on the prize.....2013 AMYA SB O/D Nationals at Spreckels Lake during The America's Cup Race here on San Francisco Bay. Who's got it better than that?! Nobody.

Mark your calendars: off-season SB "beer-can" (informal) Race #3 is Saturday, December 9, 1-3. RSVP helps planning.

"Gentlemen, splash your boat!"

nice stuff being sold, and the items that did sell were very low in price. maybe the word will go out that good deals are at our show/swap . $11.00 bucks for a boat.

The swap-meet was a success by any (all) standards.

Note-South County RC (AC) holds a swap-meet in the spring before flying season AND in the fall after flying season.

Lets consider opening our season with a swap-meet and closing (like this year) with a swap-meet.

Clearing the "garage" before the season and at the end of the season is a good thing.

Observations About the Swap Meet

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I think more promotion would have gotten more sellers, but because of the two meetings (board and general), we would have been hard pressed to fit them in.

I actually screwed up, because I missed the memo in the newsletter about starting in the afternoon. I've been stretched pretty thin with volunteer work lately, and constantly run behind in reading newsletters. So, I did what I tend to do with repeat events that I'm in charge of, and took short cuts by using the previous year's email broadsides, graphics, photos, text, times, etc. This year I shamelessly purloined Craig's excellent Swap Meet graphic, brought it into Photoshop, and added text. In other words, I don't do work unnecessarily, because I simply don't have time.

All that said, I would never have chosen to schedule a swap meet to run concurrently with two club meetings and a sailboat race. However, as it turned out, we had buyers and sellers who inadvertently attended their first club board meeting, and/or general meeting, so there was more community building than usual. In addition, holding the swap meet the way we did, with most sellers setting up before the meetings started, meant that club members who may have only come for the meetings were exposed to all that stuff for sale. The result was a higher number of buyers, which translated to a higher number of sales.

By ending the silent auction at 1:00 PM, the "beer can" sailors had a chance (and the space) to prep their boats, and swap meet attenders got to walk to the lake and watch the races, or play with their new acquisitions.

All in all, everything worked out. The club made $86 on the silent auction, which would have paid for the snacks and drinks, had I remembered to procure them. And I personally took in $150, to boot, which enabled me to turn around and buy stuff I wanted. So, I intend to take the very same approach next year, if it's approved, and publicize the beer can race too (assuming it happens).

Rob,
How much better can it be? The 7 beer-can skippers adjusted because a beer-can race is informal and fun by definition. The point is for everyone to have a good time doing this-or-that and that we did. Please consider a "season opener" swap-meet AND season ending swap-meet. Some of us want to "clear-the-garage" at the beginning of the season while others want to "clear-the-garage" at the end. Its all good.

Surf boats !

A bit of a change of subject, I know there are more than a few members who are into the CG rescue boats ( Mr. Leggo, Fodigo ) last night on KQED I saw a Rippin show called "Guardian of the Gates: The Surfboats".

Here is some text:

"This documentary takes a look at one of the elite Coast Guard Search &Rescue crews that conduct over 600 rescues a year. Filmed at the nation's second busiest Coast Guard station - located right next to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco - it gets an inside look at what makes these search and rescuers put their lives on the line every day."

Great onboard footage !

Gave me a GREAT appreciation for what these guys do every day, Anyone on a boat out there is Lucky these guys exist.

It will air again several times this month on KQED.

The day after Thanksgiving was a beautiful day in the park. Cpl.Fuzz and I were out there around 11 and it was wonderful, if a tad windy, at Lakeside.

Some of the new buoys.

At about 12:30 the rest of the work crew showed up to put buoys in the water to create a safe haven for scale and electric boats. So afar, so good! Hope the buoy system will work to slow the speeds on the Lake.

If the speed issues are not resolved, this will probably be the future.
The restricted Scale Area (in Blue) was mandated by a Rec & Park Commission vote in 1990 covering gas boats.
Gas boats are already banned from the red areas as well as Turtle Cove under Rec & Park rules, fast electric boats can be locked-down and regulated just like gas boats are currently if a workable solution isn't found.

And I really am working on the other pictures.... will be posting them soon. Some other very pressing things got in the way and I had to try and deal with those first.

I'll get the others as soon a i can....

Thanksgiving was OK, but bittersweet. We had to put a very special kitty to sleep the day before, so that kinda put a bit a damper on things for all of us.

Bring you bird back out on Sunday and I'll try to get some more shots of her.

I finally have time to look back at the forum posts. darn it..I missed the broadcast time you just listed..

But looking at TVGuide.com, I see they may have the show re-broadcasted a few times later this week... Looks like a cool show.

One of the motor lifeboats I'm refurbishing is of the ones that are docked near the Golden Gate Bridge.

In regards to the placement of bouys, I feel that if there was more of a buffer zone between the fast boats (gas/elec.) and the scale/sail boats there would be less chance of collisions and NEAR misses,,(between the two), there is not alot of pond to utilize when it's a nice sunny day, and you have 20-30 boaters trying to run in the space that the bouys dictate,(also the "Hot Pit" zone.) I understand that park rules state that no more than two boats that exceed 15mph shall be on the water at any one time, but humans are hardheaded, and that rule is sadly overlooked.....I've talked with several of the boaters out there and they, I, could not understand the reasoning that if some group/individual(s) were to do this type of action,(putting hazrd bouys in the water) under the implications of safety, then they should have integrated more of a buffer zone between the slow boats, the "Hot Pit", and the fast boats.......... in this observation, there is plenty of pond to accomodate this, but to cramp them all together is just asking for a mishap........... MoParty This line of buoys is as the Park and Rec set it up in 1990. Fail to understand what you think we should have done differently. The space to the right of the buoys extends to the end of the Lake, Safety is keeping the G0-Fastee type more into the center of the Lake. The fast pass towards shore is exciting but dangerous as H--l as that is where the spectators tend to gather and if you lose it to the radio gods and touch the shore it will be airborne, hurt one spectator seriously and we all are in danger of l;osing our running privileges.

There already is a 'buffer zone,' it's just hardly anyone honors it.

NAMBA and the other power associations are unequivocal in their stance about running fast craft near a shoreline, especially on waters without an elevated shoreline or safety barricades/netting - it is not allowed. Boats running at speed are not allowed within 50 feet of the shore and must slow down within that distance. Violate that rule, get in an accident and you could find yourself in violation of your insurance coverage and paying for someone's hospitalization out of pocket.

Take a good look at the "rules" the Rec. and Parks mandated - 15mph and a 65db at full throttle measured at 50' feet.

That noise abatement rule alone, when enforced, effectively BANS gas/nitro outriggers, shovels noses, deep-Vs and anything else capable of high speed using an I/C engine and a lot of slow cruisers as well from Spreckels Lake. Almost* NOTHING with a gas or nitro powerplant can pass the 65db at full throttle noise limitation! 65db is the level of quiet conversation in a quiet room. 70db is the inside of a quiet car in motion. R&P knew this when they passed and mandated those rules.

This was NOT the Club's idea, our own rules were more lenient; 25mph and 80db @ 100 feet, nor was the exclusion zone mandated in the same way, there was just a pool-rope with floats barrier out to the 75ft buoy from shore. Speed boats stayed at least 75 feet out from shore when running at speed, that alone created a safe area to run scale and slow boats. But since it was a Club rule that only affected members of the Club and not the public, a few wise guys ran fast and without mufflers and then Rec & Park got pd off and mandated what shall be forevermore.

That was then and this is now and when the buoy and rope was last set up a number of weeks back, someone pulled everything out and dumped it in the pit area. So, OK, now we are going to have to do it Rec and Park's way.

* Capt'n Billy's boats always manage to get under 65db at 50 ft even though they have big zenoas.

Speed Gun

Just heard a roomer a few days ago from a Sargent that next year the SFPD will be doing spot checks for speed violations. I have not found what the ticket will cost yet. I'll post when I get that info. So this has gotten the attention of somebody in the city. Police yourself's or be Policed I guess. Well it was fun while it lasted.

Fine is reputed to be as follows....

first offense -
$100 for violating the posted rule (on the sign) - speed.
$100 for violating the posted rule (on the sign) - noise level.
$100 for not reading / disobeying the sign.
--------
$300 Possible Total for the City. - (creative, n'est-ce pas)

So, yes, thanks to the folks running their I/C boats without mufflers, running at speeds in excess of 50mph, exceeding their skills and hitting other boats or flying out of the Lake and smashing into parked cars, etc., the attention of Rec & Parks as well as SFPD has turned toward the Lake and they may be contemplating 'coming down' on the fast electrics as well because of excessive speeds and the accidents.

Almost everyone using that Lake are pretty responsible, even most of the go-fastie electric guys and the amphibious fly-boys. They do not want to see "Imperial Entanglements" descending upon the Lake, but for the handful of people who just gotta see how far they can push things, thanks for attracting attention.

Rules

They are there for a reason! To protect everyone. No one is perfect Things can happen that you don't see coming. Why do you think there so many car accidents? Things can go wrong in seconds at speed. I saw a woman run into the back of a straight truck the other day. She jumped out of her car and screamed What the Fxxx just happened. HELLO you ran into the truck in front of you LOL

Thank-you Gentleman for the the clarification of the purpose of the bouys.... what is needed is to whoever has knowldge of the powers that be who took it upon themselves to do so, should've MARKED a gas boat area further apart from the scale/sailboaters that would allow a larger part of the lake to be utilized.... seems we ALL like to hang out by the Hot Dog stand, and most of the LooKee"Loo's do to ..you can end up with almost 50-60 people cramped in that designated area, just to watch us enjoy our hobby,For SAFETY purposes, I'd suggest( to whoever) to make /establish a GAS zone only, 50yrds. east of the HotDog stand, this way, Launch and Recovery of these fast boats can be done in an area where others are'nt just "floating" about... I Firmly agree that safety is our #1 priority, and if your gonna do somthin ... do it right. I'm sure Parks and Recs can spare a gallon or two of green paint to highlight this area... I'll be at the pond this weekend to discuss whatever it takes to make this area as safe as possible... R.C. Lazo

moparty 50 yds is 150 feet in my figures and that is all of the protected area total. If you are not happy with the working area and rules set up by the Park and Rec go somewhere else to do your thing. The rest of us would appreciate it very much.

Just a heads up for all go fast boats. Please feel free to come to a meeting at Kaiser Cove in Fremont. You must have NAMBA insurance, so look into that info. We are looking for more gas, nitro and electric boats to race. There have been some serious changes recently, and there are more changes to come. We fall under NAMBA district 9.

Ok, you want to push it, I can understand that but let me make sure you understand the stakes involved....

1) What part of the posted rules, when enforced, effectively ban nearly all performance-model I/C watercraft do you not understand? R&P had to understand this effect when they wrote them and yet those are the rules they made. R&P did not like fast I/C boats in the 80's and 90's, I can't speak to whether they do now, but I have been informed by others on multiple occasions, just like then, because of the actions of a handful of people, you go-fastie gentlemen ain't endearing yourselves now either. Do you really want R&P or the SFPD enforcing the letter of the law on the Lake?

And just so we are totally clear - NO I/C POWERED MODEL MAY EXCEED 15MPH!
We can still run heavily muffled I/C cruisers (displacement hulls) and scale boats, but any type of un-muffled, I/C performance craft will exceed either the speed or noise abatement rules.

Got it??
2) Do you really want I/C watercraft (and probably fast electrics) to join gas powered aircraft in the SF Muni Code?

powered by liquid fuel or designed to be used
with such fuel;
There is a corresponding section of code in the Port Authority Code as well.

Just so we are clear - legally, that places possession of a model I/C aircraft in the same category as possession of a firearm, explosive device or fireworks on Park property. This was enacted in the Seventies after an accident at the Polo Fields involving a U-Control aircraft.

The consequences under the California Penal Code for disorderly conduct conviction is a permanent criminal record, $400 and/or 90 days in county.

Is this what you want to occur to gas and fast electric boaters??? It is probably more likely that you might think!

Rec & Park has pretty much left the model boaters on Spreckels Lake alone, to police ourselves and do our own happy thing without any real interference, trusting the stakeholders on the Lake to be 'good citizens.' If they come down there and start enforcing the rules NO ONE IS GOING TO BE VERY HAPPY!

Robert, the comment allegedly made by Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto after the raid on Pearl Harbor is kind of appropriate to this situation; "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant...." Why, Robert, do you, and a few other folks insist on standing there, kicking the giant's bs? Rest assured, the giant of R&P is beginning to stir!

The "powers that be" would be Rec & Parks! The placement of the buoys implements a ruling made by the Rec & Parks Commission in 1990. The posted rules were handed down from R&P with the message Follow the Rules or NO MORE MODEL BOATS. These have been the Park's rules for 22 years! Don't you think it is time to start following them - instead of pulling buoys out of the water as someone did a few weeks ago.

50 yards of green paint for the gas boats only zone??? That is bigger than the entire current power-pit area plus the eastern area under the trees beyond the hot dog stand. (And we can't even get the 'No Bicycling' signs on the tarmac repainted!)

No! Re-read the above and decide! If you cannot play by the Rec. & Park rules for Spreckels Lake while at Spreckels Lake, the Fremont (NAMBA club) site really is a wonderful site, much better for go-fasties of all types and because of its shores and surroundings. It is really a much safer site for them, hobbyists and spectators, than Spreckels could ever be and you can run flat-out, full speed with other guys who are quite competitive and do the same, but you will need to buy a NAMBA membership. Kaiser Cove is only about an hour and a half away from Spreckels.

ps. Oh, "<mopartybob>," if you're gonna troll, use your forum handle, not a two-post 'sock puppet.' Kinda' obvious. Forum Stats If I'm wrong, srry.

There is, on I/C powered boats - honored almost entirely in the breech which has led to accidents, contention and other issues of which, I am told, R&P has apparently begun to take notice of..

Gas boat safety concerns at Spreckles.

I have been to Spreckles and if I were out walking by with my family, dog, etc and saw a 4 foot+ long weedwacker type engine powered boat capable of 50 plus mph tearing up the lake with the way the sidewalk is right next to water all around the lake I would be very concerned about safety regarding that boat.

Spreckles seems to be a lake more suited to slow scale models and slow sailboats, not large gas boats capable of speeds in excess of 50 mph.

lol... When Spreckles Lake was built and designated for model boats, I don't think any machine of the time could do 50 MPH!

Not to change the subject, but changing it anyway. Did you see the Coast Guard Helicopter in hurricane Sandy doing the HMS Bounty Rescue on tv tonight? It was on at 5 o'clock on the Weather Channel called "Coast Guard: HMS Bounty Rescues". The one swimmer that jumped into the water and swam over to the life raft said he took off his mask and said to the folks inside, "Hey, I am Dan, I heard you guys need a ride", now that's Awasome. He's the guy I would want to see when things weren't looking so good. It would just help to turn things a bit more normal.

Okay, ill get off my butt and upload the Slo-mo video of our own helicopter coast guard heros flying to save down pilots on our very own Spreckels Lake.

good one. I have seen one at lakeside before not so long ago. it looked like it ran good. maybe a roll of pennies is all that would be needed and a metal prop. but that's nothin. all those lake side parents that want to get started to let little William have fun asking where can they get a boat, well this is just the ticket. comes with everything needed. but to answer your question, nope. can't remember who the perp is. but one could save 40 bucks and just pick it up lakeside. runabouts are fun little boats.

For my sins I have been punished.... I have been elected the new Power Squadron Officer for The Club.

I voted against me on general principal (and just to be cantankerous), but I were outvoted!

Oh yes, almost forgot - Dec 15th is the annual SFMYC Club Parade of Lights Flotilla and Festival starting around 17:00 (5pm)

The Weather Channel even says we should what nice weather - So be there, ya scruvey dogs!
