charger help needed for RC car now/RC plane later

Hello everyone!

I want to get started in RC cars as a hobby with my young son. We will learn together. I checked out the RCcars site, but it doesn't to have near the traffic or the expertise that I've found here so I hope it is OK to post my question here.

I am looking at the Traxxas Slash RC electric car with NiMH batteries. I'm told by the hobby shop that the charger it comes with is a simple, slow, wall charger and I will not be happy with it. I'd like something primarily faster, and maybe something I can even use for RC plane batteries in the future.

A definite bonus would be if the charger could be used as a trickle charger for a real car battery - like the Battery Minder or Battery Tender.

So far I've seen the following:

Onyx 200 $40: looks like it would be a good basic charger for NiCd and NiMH for right now, but not for plane batteries, right?

Triton EQ $120: hobby shop says this is a very nice charger and would more than handle my current or future needs and, according to them, could even charge a real car battery.

Hyperion 606i $110: hobby shop says this would be their first choice, but they were out of stock. They said they thought the Triton EQ is nearly equivalent and suspect it is even built by Triton.

Accu-Cycle (Tower Hobbies) $139: hobby shop didn't have this but said this is an old technology charger

Venom Pro (Tower Hobbies) $139: hobby shop says to stay away from this one and we got to talking about something else before I could find out why.

What would be my best bet given these choices? It seems either the Hyperion or Triton are very good chargers. Should I consider any other candidates?

Thanks in advance for any input!

My recommendation AC or DC rated 8 amps or 100 watts $129.99 No power supply required.

From your list > Hyperion 606i

iChargers are another great choice for DC only http://www.progressiverc.com

I really like my 50$ AC6 and actual I like both of them but the 50W output is limiting it when it comes to charging 4S packs and higher and above 3000mah.

Thank you.

If I don't anticipate getting into RC planes this season (or even next) and just want to focus on the RC cars (NiMH), would I be better off getting something like the Onyx 200 and when I'm ready for planes, get the appropriate charger? Is the Onyx 200 a good charger? I'm wondering if charger technology might change by then and it might be better to wait. ??

By the way, is there a link with individual charger reviews here?

Bob,

The Passport has a 100 watt PSU, not 100 watts output power. The manual does not list what the output is. My guess 75-80 watts.

leethetreeguy just recommended this charger to me (AC6). I need to charge 1S, 2S and (someday) 3S. The price looks good, I only wish my LHS had this model. I think my E-Sky stockers are going south (2 1/2 yo) as my 2S batts, the cells are starting to go way off and fly times are short. I know nothing about chargers. Helidirect is less than 5 minutes from my house. Could you guys take a peek and tell me what strikes your fancy. I would really appreciate it:

I'd like to stay in the $50.00 range but, I can be a little flexable. Thanks again.

Mike.

PS: I hope I posted in the right place.

A lot of people on an RC truck forum like the Thunder AC6. Price is reasonable and does not require a power supply.

I would not buy a charger that does not charge LiPo cells. If you stay in RC ground you will end up running LiPo or LiFe batteries.

Thank you Van. Yes, i would like a charger to charge 1S, 2S and 3S LIPO batts. I should have pointed that out. The link you provided, it sounds like guys who bought the Thunder AC6 are happy campers. Just have to keep it in a cool place and maybe keep a small fan on it.

Onyx 200 for now?

Thanks everyone. I think it is going to be at least a year before I get into RC planes. We are going to start with RC cars (NiMH). I'm wondering if battery or charger technology will change by then such that I should just get a decent NiMH/NiCd charger. Anyone have experience with the Onyx 200 charger my local hobby store seems to like?

@ Mark
The link Vanwall posted (forums) many members said they had to elevate this charger off the surface to let it breath or to let air circulate under and around it as it doesn't have a built in fan.
