Herr Piper J-3 Cub

Has anyone built a Herr J-3 Cub? If so what power, gearbox, prop size and battery did you use?

Cub Conversion

I have the rubberband model converted to RC. I covered it with silk and dope. The motor is a GWS-A with a 9/4 prop. I am using a GWS receiver, 2 HS-50 servos to drive ailerons with coupled rudder and 7 120nicds. The model is smooth and much faster than a Litestik slow fly type. Takeoffs are very straight and it breaks ground with a breath of elevator. All in all a very good model but not one that you enjoy flying in the street in front of the house. If horsed around roughly it will not handle very nicely and will drop out of the sky. Keep it fast and smooth and it is great.

Ben,

Herr do 2 Piper Cubs. I guess yours is the smaller (18 inch?) one. They do a 32 inch(?) one, and I'm wondering if anyone has built that as a Park Flyer yet!

Cub size

I converted the rubber powered kit # 103. They also have a kit #302 that is designed for Speed 280. Both kits have a 35 inch wingspan although it looks smaller than that for some reason. I usually check to be sure I am not using the centimeter side of the yardstick.

Herr has 3 j-3 piper cubs. Rubber or free flight, park flyer(280), and speed 400 sized. Just wanted to make the water a little less clear.

I'm just starting construction on the 48" span Cub with floats. According to Tom Herr, I will need a Speed 480 due to additional weight and drag of the floats. I happen to have a 7.2V Graupner Speed 480 -- Does anyone know of a gear box, any kind of gear box, that will fit this motor? Even though the can is the same size as a Speed 400, the mounting holes are a different width.

Hobby Lobby has 2 g/box's for a 480, 3.33:1 and 3.8:1. They are the planetary type and sell for $24.00. Go the electric flight accessory page on their site. Look like nice stuff for the money.
