Giant Byron F-20

I was thinking of getting this plane, converting it to electric, and becoming another Billydee. After consultation with Ron101 I changed my mind and decided to pass on it.

This plane looks like something that XPS might be interested in, this is right up their alley.

What do you guys think? RTF weight as it sits is 13.5 lbs.

lack of ducting and small inlets = crappy flight times.

Actually should make a good Byron EDF conversion. No inlet duct work is needed. Won't be fast 110 to 125 MPH but would look good in the air.

Bob,

I'm glad you responded as I know that you are into Byrons. What would you do, just leave that big cheater hole where it is. Anyway, I guess that is a cheater hole that is on the belly.

Does this airframe have the ability to fly slow and land slow? Another thing, Rohm retracts, any good?

The Rhom gear are at their absolute limit on this one. The side frames are the weak spot. I would convert it to E-byrons to see if you like it, then have some ducts made and convert to D-max or Ramtech.
I saw one fly years ago and it was not a floater. Pull the power off, and it lands, no sailing by.

The Byron stuff always gave me a good chuckle....and the nerve to call it a "Ducted" fan. Oh and you gotta love blowing the exhaust onto the rotor blades....

WOW,

This does not look like the plane for me, too much has to be changed and at $1000.00 for a oil soaked fuse, this would be a project that wouldn't result in a happy ending.

Does anyone have anything good to say, this F20 looks good in the pictures.

the xps/dynamax system with one of my inlet rings would be better than no ducting.

Hey the F20 does look nice but for a few more dollars go to BVM website for the electra. Yes it is a kit but you will have a fast airframe and you built it. Electra $1,495. Your $1000 and the servos toss, engine toss, rear tail surfaces lots of work, CG all the electronics your almost going to be building. So for a $1000 your getting $500 if your lucky as you are going to spend $1500 to takeoff easy. But for $500, lets go fly and test. There are should be some old videos of this. I remember back in the day at Whittier Narrows someone tried to fly a F-20 Byron kit turned hard into final and that thing pointed it nose straight down to terra ferma. Write off. But if you go for it make sure to let us know how she flys.

You made good sense. That is the kind of advice I give others, but when it comes to me........well sometimes I make bad moves.

For example, the worst move I ever made regarding an airplane was missing Ron101's A4. That plane was a steal and the buyer should be arrested for unarmed robbery.

I won't be able to tell you how the F20 flies, I'm not getting it unless the seller reduces the price to $200 bucks and I won't insult him with that kind of offer.

On to better things

I would never pay $1000 for that plane........$500 and I pay shipping...........and if I flew it I would fly it as it was built...cheater hole and all. I have the Byron F-86 and I am flying it using the Hurricane fan(after market to fit Byron shroud)12s and Hacker Turbo. The plane is fun to fly. I did some damage on the lg in a bad landing. The Byrons need a little reinforcement in the fuselage near the tain fin on the F-86.....these planes were not meant to be "fast".

you don't want that turd bucket .. the F-20 not my A-4...lol
if will putt around for 3:00 and have to land...

Wait a couple weeks to see my top secret projects show up that should turn some heads and have good full ducting in a clean airframe....
makes for a better EDF

will get two and fly in formation

There are too many new aircraft on the market and coming onto the market to pay top dollar for an old airframe such as the Byrons....unless you like older models.

I am waiting on a couple airframes which should show up soon......one scale and one is a sport model.
