I think all that wire stretches to some degree . I received very good advice
from a knowledgeable club member , when he is doing standing rigging he
will take the shroud or stay wire , cut a bit extra ( and do your crimp or barrel
wrap on one end ) secure the finished end to shop ceiling and put a weight
on the other end ( he uses 5 lb. hand weights) letting the wire hang over-
night will take most of the stretch out of the wire length you are using.
then set your final end length's . it seems to work .

Be careful using the Surflon stranded, coated, picture hanging wire... it will stretch. I have a picture framing shop and use it all the time. I use solid fishing leader wire for that reason.
Surflon stranded ss wire has no problems on a scale model sailboat.
SACMYC uses this with no problems.

I have always had good luck with the stainless fishing leader. It still probably wouldn't hurt to give it a coat of oil.

I was actually curious if anyone had tried the Great Planes ones because the attachment to the wire is different. It appears to be a sort of "Stay Lock" system like on real boats instead of just a crimp tube. They should be here today, I will report back.

Rcsoar4fun - Thanks, you're the first to answer my question. If it truly is like a Sta-Lok fitting, can the leader wire be seperated into something that can be assembled? That must be the kind of wire the terminal was designed for. I can't imagine an airplane using something bigger and heavier. Perhaps the fitting just has a concealed crimp sleave, which would be fine for our stuff too.

It doesn't look like there is room to conceal a crimp, but who knows. Either way it looks less likely to snag than a crimp and a bit more "finished" looking.

Now if the mail man would just hurry up!

Alrighty, now we know!

Its not really like a stay lock, there is a hole drilled in the end of the coupler, like the standard coupler. After looping the cable through the coupler a machined cap is screwed over the end, trapping the cable. A pretty slick setup. The coupler and clevis attract a magnet, so I assume they are chrome plated steel. There is also a nice bump on the clevis to keep the included silicone retainer in place.

Any stainless steel can be soft or hard soldered.I would be careful about having your sails chaffing on this cutting cable.
I bought AFW Surflon 300ft. of vinyl coated ss stranded 60lb.test wire for only $24.00 delivered.Product #C060T-4
I have been using ss wire for 30 years.

John

Good Place to get SS leader - nice prices

I agree with John (jaguar75) on the Suflon product. I mentioned in a previous post, a great place to purchase Surflon Nylon Coated 1X7 Stainless Steel leader wire and the matching sleeves is at: southcreekshop.com They are a family owned business in VA. I have ordered several times and each occasion, received great service. Phone #804-454-2588.

Here in So. Ca. and couldn't find this product at any prices that didn't make me gag, so I went to google and came up with these guys. I saved enough to pay for my SS turnbuckles!

Thought this might be of interest. This is the suppliers description of their Surfon 1x 7 nylon coated SS leader.

”Surflon 1X7 is a all-round leader wire for toothy fish. This wire is our
Surfstrand 1X7 stainless steel with a smooth coating of nylon. A specially
selected grade of nylon, tough yet flexible, is used to seal out water,
reduce visibility, and improve the life of the line. Compared to our
competitor's old style 1X3 construction, Surflon's 1X7 construction offers
higher break strength and more realistic action. Surflon 1X7 is an effective
wire for hard-charging, toothy fish such as Bluefish and Mackerel.
Available in Bright, Black,Camouflaged.”

We sure hope our boats are never attacked by a big “toothy” fish. I guess if it happens, at least our rigging will be OK!

I listed the tests that I have used. I like the 45 and 30 lb test but 60lb test is good for rigging as well.

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF PRICING FROM: southcreekshop.com
