The higher the C rating, the higher the cells are capable of discharging. For example, a 20C 2100 mah lipo can discharge at 42 amps (cell count does not matter), and a 30c 2100 mah can discharge at 63 amps. A higher C rated pack also should be capable of holding its voltage a lot better, so a motor could actually begin to draw more amps because the voltage is higher.

don't you mean...higher voltage "lower" amps?

No, the more voltage you send to a motor, the faster it is going to want to turn. With a load on it, it's going to suck more amps to try and get that load up to rpm.

I must be thinking about higher voltage packs using less amps to do the same job...my bad?

Bill

With a given motor and propeller, increasing the number of cells in the battery will greatly increase the current.

Also to add - A higher C rating means a heavier battery and sometime increased dimensions for the same mAh. One positive benefit is that usually, a higher C rating means the lower the internal resistance of the pack. A lower resistance in the pack means you get more voltage delivered to your motor and less heat is generated.

The July 2010 Model Aviation magazine issued by the AMA has an article on this very same subject called "C: What is it all about?" The author suggests that he would rather use a lower C rating and a higher mAh <to get longer flight times> as long as you don't compromise the flight characteristics of the plane.
