Mini Bronco OV-10a
Mini Bronco OV-10a
my shot at a scratch built using dollar store foam (3mm)
I have no CF rods or such but loads of spruce spars n such , from my pre-foam slimer days.
any how just a simple start .
( i will post a PDF of templates n such if anoyone is interrested )
this is going to be powerd by guts ripped out of a AirHogs Switchblade ( 2 . 5 ch . that .5 is just a solonid thing , possibly hook it to ellivator )
its sitting at 39g before guts go in . and it glides well even just temp taped together
hope you like.
version2 flying well

the pure foam chuck tests flew so well , in light wind , that i'm gonna make apure glider version and add 1 inch to the wing lenght .
I will pop out a PDF of it as i make the glider.
but now for the motors n stuff , as i port over the switch blade guts .
- it took some time reducing it's guts , relime AUW looking to be 88g , but i know i can trim that down , as i'm cutting away stuff now . 68g would be a 1:1 P/W .
the switch blade flys 12 min on it's default "smart lipo " ( built in cut off chip on cell head )
i may make the gear , for taxying but i doubt i will get air boren , as all i have is tail wheels from my old slimers.
- i wish i had foamy wheels , and my LHS only had dubro nitro style rubber. ( i have loads of them )
maybe i can make some from foam ??
any how pics ..

guts in and tested , now i charge for a maiden if wind stays down .
the gear is just for fun , making it taxi on pavement ( they come off easy), but i doubt she can take off with gear . LOL ( it's strong enough for crash )

scale wing = not bigenoug . LOL as morst r/c stuff things need a bit of padding . so i added 6 inches to wing span . (may do 8 - 10 later )
chopped the prop gaurds off. they are not needed drag + weight was bad )
need to shed some grams ~90g , would rpefer ~70g. LOL
she has loads of power , and can climb on full thrust . when she cant climb on full thrust , it's time to cool then charge . LOL
will test the ellivator mod next

sleb you reading my mind , however my LHS is not well stocked & maill takes forever . ( i'm 14 days into waitting for my 30g motor for my big titan project to clear customs . LOL
that is 99g , i need it to be 70 , so i removed some sections of foam and put packing tape over holes . and it flew better .
also rudder controll surfaces removed , as they were too good , and made vector thrust almost nothing ( i saved em , lol )
the 6 extra inches of wing is just taped on ( i love how tests on small craft is just tape . lol )
I tested the elevator actuator in flight , and it is wicked effective , but don;t do it without full throttle , as if your air speed is too low you stall , but if yo are going fast , it will flair , & .. shows me a bit of preview that this could float easy . rite now it's too fast & too slow a turning rate for my back yard , LOL ( up to field soon )
also where teh trust vectoring is very smooth and wide turns I thout i could hook it to trigger left a rudder , ( a keep it in the field device ) buy just adding tail surface(s) back.
Oh and that actuator is very strong , it can flex & break the bell crank ( oops ) . LOL
i need to sand more , the more foam i round and smooth out the faster she goes .
I think the KF foil is causing too much drag ? but i'll just try tape over the step .
ALso i needed to use 'glass' on a few spots ( very thin nlyon like fabric & CA )
- so far the sucky Air Hogs switch blade guts are doing well, but i can see a micro RX with built in twin actuators & esc would be wicked .
and if i could have 2 micro ESC mix with rudder 33% at TX it would haul , ( but have to wait for santa for a new TX . lol )
Plans will come soon , i can post my first run rough prints i used on 8.5/11 , for this build ? if any one wants that - very basic , you will have to be used to improvising . LOL ( scratch build section I know )
more to come , & video if weather plays nice.

Can't wait to see the video and the plans. Looks like it could be a good buid for anyone with some spare electrics. You can do this first one with the guts you have and anoter with the separate parts as orders do take awhile to come in, since it appears to be very well balanced and Itlooks so good.

well i just flew it in back yard , and it was well , but needs to go to park on calmer day .
seems to handle wind by weather cocking and hovering if you match thrust .. LOL
- the elivator actuator is fun but i think i will put a rudder option too , for solid left turns , as a option .
if i had a micro RX with 2 built in actuators, and ESC , this would rock . touch bigger lipo.
It flys ok now but i will be drilling / removing foam form sections that dont need it . see if i can bring weight down .
I will video at least a simple back yard flight tomorrow weather permitting .( park would rock )

down at a local field.
it was way tail heavy . LOL i had CG wrong . after my cam batteries died , i taped some stones to nose , and it flew very well .
in fact i may have to re do the body section , with all the gear up in nose area.
it is surprising the bronco needs the CG within 1/2 inch of LE > . LOL
AUW 99g , thrust is 65g at wot . thrust vectoring don't kick in until 80% thrust .
the pulse elevator was not needed / unused, so i may make it a snap rudder or bomb release .
but .. lol , i could not resist one more flight, in a smaller prep field just over from soccer field.
flew one solid flight around a base ball field , so i got brave (stupid ) , and let it get high up , and it drifted into plane eating trees , fallowed by spitting out and dead fall to some rocks . so nose was blow apart ( nothing CA & tape wont fix . LOL )
- i have a video of my smaller jet set , it flew very well today , must have had 40 min of fly time on jet set.
- i 'll add it here in a few.
( charge one fly one .... repeat .... all day till beer time )
Video for smaller jet set , ( could still be converting on vimeo )

here is plans ( jpg , leter size paper full print for easy use )
now these are just the alpha plans , makes a good true proportioned chuck glider.
Body = 4 laminations .
lai booms = 3 laminations , but only midle lamination has actual vertical.
see pics of my prototype.
or ask questions . if you mod eit and improve , pleas epost pic .n such so we all can have fun .
:: not shown in those plans is the 6 inch wingspan increase of flight video . now i have 10.5 inch more wingspan for tomarrows test . LOL
|Jul 21, 2010, 02:02 AM|
here is after repairs
& adding ballast inside nose . ( i hate ballast , prolly rebuild main fuse soon with all gear up front )
& 10.5 inches added to wing span.
