Scratch Built Helicopters

wow... a whole new world i never knew existed!!

my son was given a 3-channel coax rc helicopter for his birthday a couple of weeks ago. as soon as i had it into the air (coz i had to help him of course ) i was hooked. i had no idea that could be so much fun.

in the last week I have been trawling the net for info on heli's and came across this forum. OMG!!! what a gem! there is more info on here than i could ever imagine. over 1.5 million messages in the electric heli section and another 40,000 in the fuel heli section. in one week i have learned about the different types of heli, the difficulties of flight, the frustrations and problem areas that different models experience and the utter thrill and elation of a 'perfect flight'.

now i'm kinda cash strapped so i was stunned when i saw the little (and not so little) heli's that people were making in their own homes with hand tools and needed to know more. as soon as i am able i will be making one or more of these little marvels! the best thing i think about DIY is the fact that if you crash and burn, it is relatively easy to repair yourself or just make a new one and transplant the electronics.

as i search for all the info i can on making my own heli i am struck by how obscurely hidden some of these awesome threads are so i am undertaking to glean all the info i can from them and compile a guide to DIY helicopter building. to anyone who has built from scratch or heavily modified a helicopter using home made parts... can you help please? i want to make this a comprehensive resource made by people who make the heli's. the more assistance i get the better the result will be for anyone who wants to have a go at creating their own heli.

cheers

Jay

I'd love to see some more examples of home made heli's and perhaps some discussion as to principles, methods, tricks and difficulties associated with them
now uploading also some video of the heli flying

Also feel free to post pics of vids!!

Got a link for the plans?

I'm hopfully finishing mine this winter but I'm stuck to off the shelf electronics which aren't really small enough for the size of heli I want and am capable of making.

I was looking forward to palmos milligram heli but not heard anything for a while.

Assumingly were talking micro here due to the section you've posted in, I've made big machines from ground up but not a micro. I've modded off the shelf ones to the point of remaking everything but that's just altering already designed and made helis.

If you can run a HH gyro off 1S, then there are enough options
for light RX's.
for servo's there are the cheap linear ones @ HobbyKing ranging
from 1.7gr to 2.2gr (But I dont like them due to some wobble
of the control horn, and a short stroke for the digital one - only 5mm)
the Spektrum 1.7gr are very nice, though cost around 20$

There is some talk over at the "indoor and micro models" about a
1.3gr digiral linear servo comming out soon... but it's quality is still
not know..
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1270167

for my CP i simply used a walkera 4g3 RX, ~4gr and comes with a 1S
gyro

Mine is palm sized, shaft tail and cp but I can't get radio gear for it.
Linear servos are not fast enough for helis.

baahhh
they are fast enough for the cyclics, thats for sure...
I had to tame mine down, as it's cyclic was insane.
this can be tuned with your head design.

I did plan on trying to mount a linear one on a VP tail
but dont have the time now to spend on this

I can't make that video out on my phone I'm afraid, I'll look at it when I get home.

If linear servos are now fast enough for cyclics I'll look into them again, it's been 10 months since I played with my design so a lot sounds like it's changed.

Thanks for all the replies guys... kabal and usul, your stuff is exactly what i'm looking for

Its so hard to find stuff on the internet about building your own heli's

Brownout.. if you go to lynxman's profile and search for all his threads, you will find his scratch built heli threads which contain the plans for each of his heli's. Lots of pics and a parts diagram

Assuming you cant find them or can't be bothered, I have attached two of them to this reply anyway. The CP version is too large for me to attach.. grr

If there are any builders from perth in australia, I'd love to catch up and see your stuff..

Cheers

also keep your eye on this thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1248574

and there is yet another 1.8gr linear servo comming out soon.. 11mm throw..
sounds sweet, but doesn't state if its digital or not

DIY Heli manual

Has anyone considered putting together a diy manual for small heli's? Surely there is enough info on the forums here along with pics and such to make an awesome guide.

U.S.U.L, small.planes, KABAL, Lynxman... if any of you or other builders out there would be willing to help out with instructions, diagrams, pics or anything else, it would be of great benefit to all

Just a thought
