I'm having trouble setting up my FS-TH9x as a slave for my DX6. Here's what I'm doing:

1) Plug rx battery and a test servo into rx
2) Plug my stereo 3.5mm audio cable into both tx's
3) Turn on the Spektrum, and test the servo (it works). Leave the TH9x off.
4) Press the trainer button on the spektrum, and move the sticks on the TH9x.

No reaction. I've also tried the exact opposite procedure, with the TH9x as master and the DX6 as slave.

Any suggestions?

Lucky you didn't burn both transmitters.

I have not experimented with the 9x in trainer mode, but I can say that most problems with trainer setups are caused by the cable. While most JR transmitters with work with a stereo cable (and the DX6 is a JR under the label except for the RF section), some Spektrum and other transmitters that use an audio-type cable will NOT work with a stereo cable. Also, some cheaP audio cables are faulty or have high resistance, while others don't fit the jack properly. Working with one transmitter does not guarantee that an audio cable will work with another.

So first suggestion is to get a proper trainer cable for JR or Spektrum. Horizon Hobby has one for about $10.

How would that happen?

Deadalus, I picked up a mono trainer cord, but I still can't get it to work. When I hold down the Trainer button on the DX6, I'm still able to control the mode with the DX6- is that supposed to happen? I thought pushing down the button would transfer control over to the other.

I got it to work. You have to remove the module from the back of the FS-TH9X.

How about opposite procedure?
TH9x as master and the DX6 as slave, did it work too?

I own TH9X too and never tried any trainer mode yet but probably soon will.

I'm trying to use a turnigy 9x as trainer radio with JR X378 as instructor. I have read that the DX6 and JRs work fine together for this, so if this works with DX6 and 9X am I right in assuming it would work fine with a JR and 9x??
