Flying Whitewater Friday

Any Riverside/SanBerdu locals care to go flying at Whitewater on Friday??

Whitewater is a steep slope just before you get into the Palm Springs area. Where all those BIG windmills are.

It was howling out near there today and I figure tommorow will be the same. Plus it's a lot cooler than normal right now too.

Whitewater

Brian,

Thanks for the invite, I am suffering from a killer cold.... if lucky I might get out of the house a little. This is no fun.

I hope you have a blast though..

Take care

Steve

Whitewater is the slope just before you get into the Palm Springs area. You get off the 10 fwy on Whitewater, cross over the freeway to the North side and follow the frontage road past the rock store, over the bridge until you hit the dirt road that heads up the hill into the windmill farm. Take that dirt road up to the top of the ridge and fly!

We did not go today but my buddy in the CHP who works that stretch of road said it was averaging 40mph today at Whitewater.

We are planning on trying to go tommorow. I hope to be there by 11am if anyone wants to join us. It's a rough slope so foam is the best choice.

I wish I could join you guys. Whitewater looks like a GREAT place to fly when the wind blows. Too bad there was no wind the day Brian took a few of us there before the PSS Fest.

Here's some pics.

This one is the launch area. Dave Garwood does a nice impression of, well... Dave Garwood!

Opps. Here's the pic.

BTW, why the heck do they call it Whitewater? The only water in the area is a tiny trickle flowing down the nearly dry river bed. It looks to me like it's probably been a few million years since there was ever any white water in that river!

Check out the wind collectors on the far ridge and in the background behind Dave in the first shot. There are THOUSANDS of these massive windmills in the area. I guess when someone puts a few thousands windmills up, you can probably expect that the place typically gets some good wind....

You should see it in the winter after its been raining for a few days! There is plenty of water in that channel.

I thought old garwood was gonna pass out in the heat that day. Of course he has that very stylish SHREDAIR hat to keep him nice and cool

DAMN it was windy! is that enough?

Yes me and Jack both flew. Jack had his P-51 ballasted up to 67 ounces and mine was around 60. They flew fine at that weight. Launching was damn near impossible. Jack dorked his pretty good trying to launch it on his second flight. I got mine off ok but after a few minutes of flying I made a close fast pass and was sucked into the face of the hill. The parts blew up over my head and landed in the desert. Damage was light it just ripped the wing off the fuse and busted one aileron. Not too bad for hitting the hill at warp 2. Jacks was also lightly damaged just needing the tail fixed.

he tried to fly his Horten but it just blew away like a paper plate. It was actually getting stronger when we left. After busting up two planes we packed it in. It was just way too hard to fly. The rocks blowing up were hitting us like BBs too. It was a laugh but way too windy to be practical.
