Onion skin vs tissue/silkspan/MonoKote

I did a little comparative shopping for Esaki tissue/silkspan/Monokote vs onion skin using the lowest prices I could find..no shipping costs or tax included

a 17.5"x23.5" sheet of Esaki is $1.47/sheet from Easy-built....that's $0.51/ft^2

a 17.5" x 10' roll of silkspan is $7.99..that's $0.55/ft^2

a 36" x 72" "roll" of Monokote is $12.99......that's $0.72/ft^2

a 12" x 50' roll of onion skin is $5.95...or ~$0.12/ft^2

you do the math

Hi Charlie,

Blue print supply house? Is that right next to the store that sells stone axes? Our local store went out of business years ago.

Try the bags in the produce section of the supermarket. Some of them are much lighter than the bags you get at checkout, but are still plenty strong for indoor flyers, etc.

Can anyone tell me about this picture? It looks to me like a bunch of Taylor-crafts with Brown Jr's or maybe Baby Cyclones (maybe too early for that) and a Clipper in the background. Also the the "dress" of the folks in the background point to "across the ocean" to somewhere other than the US. Of course the numbers on the planes themselves seem to state that. Of course I could be totally wrong about all my assumptions, that is why I'm asking

Ok, I know I'm older than dirt, but......Art supply stores also carry onion skin.....
Also, found a plastic trash bag that looks to be the same weight as the
veggie bags Lincoln is referring to......you get those at a trash bag supply house !
Terrific for Chinese lanterns

Haven't tried them yet......I'd have to find a bigger cave for indoor flying ! ROTFLMBO

A plan

Seems like we haven't seen any plans on here for a while. Here's one - a Joe Ott twin rubber plan for the Martin Maryland at 38in. I guess this must date from around 1940. This plan came in from Erik Johnson, so many thanks to him.

I will be coming back in a few days, to post a thread in the "Vintage & Old Timer" forum.

I will be pointing people to a thread in the "Balsa Builders" forum announcing the start of a contest for the fun of it; to convert a non-RC plan or kit to Radio Control.

The first one is just ending, and we decided to start running two per year.

25 people started, 17 began building, 4 have flown and 2 more may fly before the 28 Feb deadline, if weather cooperates.

In the first contest, I made a Blackburn Skua from a 30% enlarged, 1942 Earl Stahl FF plan I obtained from Outerzone (Thanks to WMD!) and made a sport scale RC from her. This time, I'm going to take a turn as contest director and will continue my Resurrection and electrification of an old Carl Goldberg Eagle.

If you've been thinking of building something converted to RC... here's a chance to have some external initiative applied... and the company and fellowship of the other builders is really grand. I've made three new friends: one lives 30 miles away, one in Austria and the third in Australia. It's been very rewarding.

Give it a thought. I'd love to see another oldie take to the skies.

David, are you going to be using the same “Requirements” ?

The requirement is pretty simple. Take a model airplane, from either a kit or plans, and kitbash it into a model airplane that flies and is controlled by a radio. The power source is totally up to you as well as the size. Choose whatever you like to build and want to fly as long as it was never designed for RC.

Judging Criteria

1. Best Kitbash
2. Best Build Thread
3. Best Overall Looking

Looks interesting.

Yes, except we will be cutting the judging to Bust Build.
I'm prototyping the rules on my blog, to include questions and decisions resolved in the first go.
