At Oshkosh I was discussing with Rod Machado, a practice use of fSX to improve your flight skills.
Okay try this .
Use a C172 to start with

Takeoff , and climb out and at 1500 feet ,pull the engine back to idle, get the nose down and maintain a safe glide speed( about 70mph) and make a shallow banking turn back to the runway and attempt to reach and land on the runway

It can be done
When you can do it from 1500 feet, try 1400 feet, then 1300 feet and see how good your skills are!

Ed
This is fun and challenging. Beats just flying around.

Ed, I assume you mean AGL and climb out straight ahead? I'll try it next time I go on.

Hi Roger,
Yes I meant AGL

My discussion as Osh was what if you took off straight ahead and all you had ahead was a congestion of buildings and also the same off to the sides?
Were would you go?
Rod suggested the turn back method but keep close attention to your speed and your bank angle.
Accident on turn backs are usually with the pilot in a panic more and not watching either speed or bank angle, and they end up in a stall-spin situation.

Making a precise shallow bank angle turn and maintaining glide speed can be done!

Well fellas my 3 week vacation is over, I am back to work as of later this afternoon!
I work a 2nd shift turn-around run so I won't be on until maybe Saturday.
Dog gone it I finally get back on gamespy and now I have to work nights!
But it pays the bills!

Hopefully only 5 more months to retirement !

Remember November 6th 2012 is national "Take out the trash day!"
Don't forget to vote to take out the trash!

If we don't take out the trash, I'll have to work maybe 4 years or more!
