Sander's Skywalker FPV camera plane build

Alright, figured I'd start a new topic. Here's how I built up my Skywalker. I strayed quite far from the typical way this thing goes together.

1) Elastic bands to hold the wings on, are you kidding? This needs a safe and secure way of attaching the wing to the fuse. I cut the center portion of the wings off and attached that to the fuse permanently. I then made provisions for two thick wall (not the supplied!) 10mm CF wingspars using ABS plastic sheet.

2) Glassed the botton with light glass cloth and WBPU. Otherwise this plane with the large AUW will have dents and scuff marks on the bottom after the first flight already.

3) Wings reinforced with CF strips to prevent folding. Originally even the EPO version would fold its wing due to lack of strength.

4) Made channels and cut outs for wiring the stuff that will be placed above the wing (OSD, thermophiles, etc. etc.). This is all easily accesible through the hatch on the side of the fuselage.

5) The elevator hinge was a joke, so I rolled my own using the tried and tested depron and packing tape procedure I use on the majority of my planes. Also made the tail plane removable so the plane can be easily transported.

Configuration used:

- HS65HB servos on all control surfaces
- Graupner 345Z 1400kV (3536 size) motor
- 9x6 prop (properly balanced!)
- 2x 3S 4400/20C (parallel) all the way in the nose
- Pixim 540vtl camera for FPV
- ImmersionRC 8ch EzUHF Rx
- ImmersionRC EzOSD
- ImmersionRC ATV channel Tx
- 3A switching BEC for Rx and servos
- Pictured is a Sanyo VPC-FH1 HD camera
- 2.0kg AUW (with HD camera or 2x 3S/4400)

I have a few issues with the design of this plane I'd like to comment on as well:

a) Tail section, needs wider tail boom and fatter tail fin, too much flex and torsion currently which makes the tail move in the prop wash and results in poor tracking (EasyStar has the same problem).

b) Nose section, must be at least 10cm longer, nose is too short now, very hard to get correct CG with the long tail boom. I need two 3S/4400 packs to balance it out without the HD camera, and one 3S/4400 with the HD camera.

c) Wing attachment, elastic bands are just not an option, my suggested solution provides for a far better and safer/stronger mating of the wing to the fuselage.

d) Control surface hinging, too rigid on the original, needs to be redone thinner or the end user needs to roll his own.

If there's any questions or when I need to clarify anything just ping me and I'll do my best to answer any queries.

Cheers,

Sander.

Sander, you need to work on your wiring. I can still see some of them

I just want to point out that the AXN has the issue too.

Very nice and clean build! I wish my planes were that good looking ...

Really nice build!

I didn't see/understand exactly how the outer wing sections attach to the center wing section? I see how they slide in place (nice wiring btw) but how do they stay in place?

That is real neat. The best part I think is your wing mount modification. I'd love to see more details which would indicate to me if it's an option for my skills. Very neat.

The wingspar slots are tapered and the ends of the wingspars filed down to an angle so they go in without scuffing up the insides of the slots. The wingspars go in with a bit of force and you really have to pull hard to get the wings to part again.

Cheers,

Sander.

It sure beats my strapping tape method. I bet it flies as good as it looks.

I have been waiting for a critical flight review before I order one one these. Sander pretty much lays it on the table.
Standing by for the report.

Hey I really like your mods, and I might have to steal some ideas when mine comes. I do like how clean the plane looks with no rubber bands, but I've found that if you use 6-8 rubber bands its REALLY strong, but in the event of a crash they will still let go, saving the plane. but then again, shouldnt be crashing I suppose.

I just realize I do have a question:

The wings are held together by the spars alone?
