To get the curves/shape of the pod and fin? I see, You're not replicating Sally, just something that uses the same wing planform... maybe not even that?!

Hey Doc,

I've been using 6mm Depron with a carbon strip inserted length ways... it weighs nothing... some light grade balsa would defo do the job too, get the grain running length ways and it'll be stiff in the right direction.

On the heavier Carbon Sally I like to bag the tail, just because it looks cool and fits in with the whole composite thing... I certainly wasnt bothered about keeping the weight down with her.

I'll be printing the fin and the pod but not the wing planform (I'll just measure it out on the foam rather than print a massive template), so I guess it's half a plan

I'll be building this one from your plans, so it'll be a Sally for sure - hopefully it will inspire me to do a second one from EPP for lightweight sloping duties/fun urban sloping/Alula replacement.

I made up a fin for a similar plane with balsa but found that it kept breaking off the bottom of the fin if the balsa was horizontal, but anything that made it strong enough to survive the odd bad landing (glass, NS, balsa ply etc.) made it too heavy. Some CF tow CA'd did work but it got messy so I think the Depron tail will be the way to go.

We can compare notes and planes later this year...
Let's see what you can do!
Hi Johann

For when there is hardly any wind - OK so this doesn't happen too often, but it is annoying when it does.

Steve - thanks for the info - might have to end up making 2 versions.

Now I know why you want a Carbon Sally....
Your Alulas ain't lasting!

Nice footage of the hawk attacks!

Cool Pasty... that's what Dbox did witht the depron... though I think he used 2 layer 3mm depron with carbon between.

I'll get to work on tracing my Alula and cutting a wing... its so small!

Can you show us some build pics and/or close ups of your composite versions?

thx. Good stuff.

btw, I pm'd Dbox... he may chime in here too. I'd love to see some detailed pics of his stuff. He said bagged wing is the way to go vs hollow molded (which he did in that thread... crazy!)

I'll come clean..
I did distort the truth...
I did cut the wing back to front!

But..
Where on the drawing does it say...
This way up!

Never mind...
It was only a trail cut so that I could seat the wing on the fuz plug!
I'll have to wait till Monday to get some more Isoboard..
This was polystyrene and a bit soft!
I'll carry on with the plug!

Steve..
What battery did you use?
Was it a lipo?
At this point, I'm basing it on 4x AAA's
Weight 54g
The furthest forward would be 40mm from the tip..
I can always change if need be..

The wing span is quite short...
Would it make much difference slightly longer?
May help with wing loading
(You know me and weight gain)

Oh, is the top of the wing flat?
With the dihedral on the bottom,
or wingtip section on the centre line?
Thanks
J

I used 2s lipo run through an old ESC on Carbon Sally and a 1s lipo straight into the RX on the light glass version. They weigh nothing and I like the fast charging, low discharge and that I have loads of them

The span is short, but thats what makes it Sally , a wider span will reduce roll rate and if you're going pure slope use you dont need the extra span. Carbon Sally goes well in light wind as it moves faster and uses the wing section lift more.

If you check out the wing section templates on the plan you'll see that the top of the wing is flat giving a smidge dihedral to the bottom, helps it to track better.

I've got the vid rendering from today, you'll see how well they go in light lift

dihedral...

I started sketching it out just now. I cant get the pdf to print full size easily, and its a big PITA to get adobe or mac preview to print pdfs over multiple pages (anyone know how?).

so... I cant get the templates to print full size.

can someone either post a pdf of just the templates, or, give me a clue how much dihedral you pasted onto the bottom of that tip template?

thanks

fun to be working on something so small!
