I thought people would just print the plan, its all there. You'll need to cut pod templates anyways... thats an easy place to start Joan

By the way, a chap in the UK is trying an EPP version, with 1mm carbon rod opposed spars and no tape etc, I think this could be the best construction for keeping the weight down

Sooo...
I've been doodling..
The pod... or fuz
It's looking heavier!
I like the idea of a fuz that the wing attachés to..
So that I can cast the fuz and tail in one,
Then everything lines up!
I'll try to cut a prototype out..
The fuz could either have a canopy,
or a slip off cone..
Let's try....

Looks cool Joan, you could of cause have made sure the fin is square by looking at it or taking measurements from wing tips.

OR you could have used marks on the wing to line things up or even made a recess in the wing for the fin to slot into.

I simply use the joint of the two wing halves as the centre line for the fin and fuz....easy.

Oh and you got the wing on back to front.. it has forward sweep

My Alula Evo is starting to look a little worn out after a couple of sessions at Signal Hill in Cape Town. The Carbon Sally and the PWP have both caught my eye as being more robust successors to my Alula.

Steve, have you done any slope thermalling with your Carbon Sally?

Hey Zummi

I fly coastal sites only so thermals are a rare beast, Carbon Sally with a weight of 400g's and a wing loading of around 8 oz/sq.ft wont thermal but makes an excellent front side sloper in light to heavy air.

If you get the weight down to around 150g's like I did with the prototype it will thermal quite happily. My current light glass version is 180g's (around 3.9oz/sq.ft) and goes very will in almost no wind off slope, with strong thermals coming through I'm sure it would thermal also... However I think the wing loading is a bit to high for flat field micro SAL type thermaling.

To improve its thermalability I'd suggest extending the wing span by a few inches and reducing the forward sweep a little. Having said that, for me the fun of Sally is its ability for fast energetic bank and yank type aeros and by making the above changes you're going to lose some of that.

Hope you play better than the last game (not that I can speak as the aussies sucked, unless you're talking of the rugby.....)

Not sure why you'd need to print the plan? I understand printing the templates, but I just measure everything onto the foam blank and cut - no laying down of templates here

I've also got some EPP which should be about the right size just waiting for a job like this - need to find some carbon spars as I've already got some light(ish) NS sitting in a box, also waiting for a job

Steve

Hey Zummi
Why would you want to thermal with all those heavenly slope sites on your doorstep?
Get some cores cut and join in!
Hermanus is around the corner from you.
We can compare notes and planes later this year...
Let's see what you can do!

neat stuff...

I like it.

i was just flying my Alula Evo 2d ago and thinking for the hundreth time "wouldnt that be great to try in composites?"

Maybe I can give it a shot too.

Seems like the tail should be simple balsa, for simplicity and weight savings, no?

Following....

Ben

ps: did you guys see the stuff Yuri ('Dbox') was doing with the Alula planform last year? see here for instance. I wonder how it turned out? Looks like he molded a little pod, etc.

Not a very long thread that...
But, it looks great!
I like the wing curvature he has..
It gives the plan form a nice elegance!

I can't wait to see what you all come up with!
I tend to make a meal out of everything I do,
But I enjoy it! And a composite version does it for me!
Give it a bash Ben!
