Carbon Sally "Thepasty"
"Carbon Sally" "Thepasty"
This "side arm launch" Carbon plank, is the product of the design and development carried out by "Thepasty" Steve.
He has tested it extensively and has finally (with some coaxing) agreed to allow his fellow slopers to to indulge in a frenzy of of build activity and orgasmic soaring enjoyment...
There are two models available, and we will discuss their merits at length.
Thepasty will kindly provide guidance and advice during "Thebuild"....
And we will do the footwork for all you DIY enthusiasts!!
There are some rules however!
1. You may not produce them commercially without his consent.
2. You have to post build pictures on this thread.
3. You have to post photo's or video of them in flight

I'll give you the make up of the two Sallys I have at present...
The section is PW1211, the coords can be found here...
For the chaps who will be cutting with templates, these are included in the PDF Joan posted up top.
That PDF is scaled 1 to 1 if printed at A0.
Carbon Sally:- span ~ 32in
Wing - 200gsm twill weave carbon, same on the LE
pod - 300gsm plan weave carbon (lost foam).
Fin - Carbon Tow from the 300g carbon cloth and 50g glass finishing layer.
Ply wood keel.
LE = 200g glass
Wings = 50g glass
Foam Core = blue foam
I added 3 or 4 carbon tows opposed top and bottom but I'm not sure they do alot.
Leccy Gear was 2 x E-power 12g metal gear digi servos, 500mah 2s lipo, cheapo 10amp ESC and a Corona RX.
Glass Sally:- span ~ 32in
Wing - 50g glass with a 200g glass LE and a few carbon tows from the 300g carbon top and bottom.
Pod - a few layers of 200g glass with a 200g carbon bandage to stiffen up where I split the pod.
Fin - 6mm depron with 0.5 carbon strips.
Leccy gear was 2 x e-power 8g digi servos, 1s 450mah lipo and 4ch corona synth RX.
PW1211 is designed for a bottom hinged elevon
the elevons are 40mm
cofg is around 33-34mm back from where the pod meets the wing TE.

Need anything else? You may want to stick these details along with the above video onto the opening post, will give people quick access to all the shizzle without havign to trawl throuh the thread.

For anyone who's been referencing the old plan I didnt update the span from my very first prototype so its 40" on that plan, this one is the proper 32".

2nd VID, you mention: " I think I get my first snif of a thermal".
Just when your arm is all worn out and you catch that thermal, it' amazing how much more energy you will find to keep the side arm launches going to catch another thermal.
Your lucky that your wife helped in the filming.
How much does your Carbon Sally come out to in ounces.

Carbon Sally came in at around 14 ounces (I used 200gsm carbon) which equates to 8oz/sq.ft, ideal for light slope work, I've also had her going in a 30mph gale and she ripped it up.
Joan me old mucker... what do you want from your Sallys?
A light glass one (my current one is 180g's) will fly in naff all wind (depending on slope) and when I say fly I dont mean stooging around, it'll carve it up. As the weight goes up it'll need a bit more wind to go well but it'll carry more speed and energy.
The Carbon Sally video above was shot in 10-12mph wind.
As for joiing the pod to the tail... why? you're adding weight out back which means more weight in the nose... and we know where that leads dont we
You could make a separate fin mould to add flanges to where the fin fits the wing, you'd get a stronger fin but less weight.

Two part mold...
Do you just stick them together?
How do you get to your gear?
Are both Sally's on the same platform?
If so we'll go light 1st!
I'm sure I'll add the weight naturally...

Moulding the pod you could have a lip on the rear pod section so that the nose slips over it and use a keel or make an inner nose to the pod just like a normal mouldy. You could even give the pod a small hatch/canopy and keep it one piece, could be tricky getting your gear in but all that goes up front is the rx and battery.

I would like to join the build group! I have had the same type of project in the que since 2006 when I built an EPP "Alula-like" sloper and it flew great. I always wanted to have a Carbon version for the few times a year that I get to fly from slopes with nice LZ's. Here is a video of the maiden of my "Le Bird", EPP construction 13.5oz. I can offer CNC cutting of cores to anyone who wishes to join the fray, I have 25psi and 60psi foam. Keep in mind that I live on the East Coast (50 mile from NYC) and I can ship at your expense.

What wing section did you use? It's not named on the drawing, is it proprietary?
I usually draw up templates using Profili and hope to have CNC running soon, so the airfoil would be useful
