When I turn the radio on (the booster is also turned on at the same time) the booster's green LED blinks very rapidly for about a second, then dims for about half a second, then turns on again and stays on. It turns off when range button is pressed on the TX, and lights up again immediately when the button is released. During the initialization stage (first second, rapid blinks) the power draw of the system consisting of the TX and the booster powered by a 3A UBEC increases to about 1A, compared to 0.5 A which it consumes during normal operation. Does my description point to any abnormalities in my system? In particular, is this power fluctuation normal?
Seems normal to me.

The amp doesn't work unless it's getting a signal

Do you know if I can leave the power plug connected or will it drain the battery? If the amp is off, does it still draw a little current or is it using a zener diode to control the current and prevent draw when it's off?

My guess it is still drawing current when the amp is "off". BTW, what do you mean by "off"?

If my amp detects no Tx signal it turns off, and the light goes out.

I have done some tests with my 9303, and using a calibrated power meter, I am only showing about 12-13 db out of the Spektrum RF Board. I know they are rated at 100mw, but this only equates to about 30 mw. Are the spektrum RF decks rated at 100mw input before the inefficiency of the the amplifier section? I really dont know that an attentuator is really needed on a setup like this. Can anyone confirm or give different measured results?

Also,

Used the same power meter to measure power after the booster, and came up with about 21dbm ERP. This is only about 100mw out of a 1000mw booster. I think some of these are a little overrated.

Below is a link to the specs on one of the boosters sold many places. I got mine on Amazon. I'm waiting for the U.fl IPX pigtail. I found that the power plug is like the one on my old Nokia phone chargers. I did have to trim a little of the rubber back so it would go all the way in to the jack.

http://www.premiertek.net/products/n.../PL-2301A.html

It states "Full output power of 1W is achieved with only 5mW input into the Booster." But later it says "Transmit Input Power Max. 100mW, Min 6mW." In either case attenuation of the input doesn't appear to be critical as long as the input doesn't exceed 100ma (20db).

I'm giving my booster 7.82v(just tapped the battery pack at some random point and wired it up). What type of resistor do I need to put in there to get it down to 6v? Or near 6v?

Also what is a good way to test that the booster is actually working?

To test? Do a full range test without booster with a friend by speaking to him what you are doing with a mobile phone, then turn on booster and add distance between you. If you have a mountain nearby get him to drive to the top and repeat the test. That's what I'm going to do, as the distance I only want to fly is from my park to around the mountain.
