Why is the attenuator needed? If i just followed the steps on the DIY Drones website and powered it off of a 6V BEC would i need one?

The attenuator is needed because the power output of the DX7 is too high for the booster and you risk blowing up the booster without it.

so I did a search on google for "4db attenuator" but i'm not sure what I'm looking for is it a mini SMA Female to male ?

Yes, SMA connector and at least 3ghz.

4.5 The user manual of the device must contain the following paragraph:
