Me P. 1101 flies

Yesterday we flew both Me P.1101 prototypes at our field .

Mine was just finished in time sunday morning, the top green paint had been applied just about two hours before the flight. HW-609 fan with Plettenberg 290-20-4 on 12 x CP 1700 cells, charged the day before and tested at ca. 630 Watts static. About 58 oz including rolled ply intake, twin ply formers to hold the fan & ducting, fully glassed surfaces and 400 mAh receiver battery.

The one built by Steve and later modified by Gregg flew with a Minifan 480 & Kontronic Fun-480 on 10 x CP1700 cells. With BEC and a bit lighter at about 49 oz, power ca. 430 Watts.

I handled the video camera as Doug first flew mine. Right after it took off the bungee Doug slowed it down and fed a few clicks of left trim. A few more circuits at full power, level flight speed ca. 141 km/h, then finally time to land. Came in quite hot and landed a few feet further in the tall grass... Perfect flight .

Next came Gregg's Me-1101, Doug did the flying while I manned the camera again. Off the bungee she lost the hatch, which made her difficult to fly. As she slowed down she went into a spin. A few cracks in the nose, ducting and wing-to-fuse joints. Took out the JePe tape and Gregg eventually bandaged her up nicely ...

Second flight of Gregg's Me-1101, with hatch now secured with tape, went pretty smoothly. Veers sharply to the left (see video) as she gets off the bungee, Doug gave about ten clicks of right trim to level her out. Then a few circuits to trim her out nicely, and a few more fast passes and finally a picture perfect landing:

Overall I'd say a great success - Steve's Me P.1101 prototype successfully moved from the "pretty to look at" edf category to the "actually flies like a jet" edf category ... Thanks to Steve Neill and Will & Dave Beavor for a great flying model !

Here's a picture of both, mine after the maiden:

Great stuff Herb, thank you for the video. Glad to see the darn things fly!

Guys, what's up with your computers? All I did was click on the links and they played right away. Update your media players, that might be the problem.

Will's father, Dave Beavor was the original designer of this plane and made a lovely set of plans to be built in wood, which is how this whole thing started.

When I got the plans there was a note wishing me the best of luck on the project, well Dave your wish came true.

Thanks for a great design and flying jet. You saved me a lot of time since I was going to start from scratch until I became aware of your plans and website.

Take a look at their site: http://www.electricflight.connectfree.co.uk

Thanks Will, your kit will be coming soon, I'm almost caught up on my orders and will be by Thursday of this week.

Then we can start round two.

Also thanks to Gregg for getting the one I built flying so soon.

Herb, you did a great job, now finish her off.

Henke: it stalled/spun after it was slowed down going to final. the hatch is quite large/lots of drag. it was just one of the flight tests .along with nose/crush testing......................

Steve, you got a winner, fast build time and performance. Even when the pilot was obviously flying at reduced throttle it was moving good. Good luck with this little honey.

There was a concern about the paint peeling off too soon, it'd be a real pity

CONGRADULATIONS TO HERB,GREGG&STEVE .I can hear and see the difference between the two models.Greggs is like a small block reving at high rpm's .you must stay on the throttle the whole flight. On the other hand herbs don't rev as hard but has more torque like a big block.Good luck in the future flights.stefanP

Thanks JJ, that's nice of you to say.

Paul,

Your the last one on the first list and I only have 3 more fuses to make to complete that first list.

Your number three. The next 9 kits will all be ready to send out no later than next Monday.

The new list can start now for anyone interested in the kit. I will also have a website up tomorrow for the plane. The next page I make over the weekend will be a constructon page.

Be sure and post your construction pics, finished pics and video's so I can make a page for all your input.

This has been a great first project with positive results. I plan to do a lot more glass kits for EDF and props as I go.

Thanks guys,

Steve

Herb,

So where did your CG end up? The original CG was 6 and 5/8 from the LE.

Will had said that he had gone as forward as 6 and 1/4 I believe.

Important stuff.

Thanks,

Before the maiden flight I moved the CG on mine from the recommended 6 5/8 (16.8 cm) about one cm forward (15.8 cm) to avoid any potential trouble.

As you can see from the video, it's a bit nosehavy so I think the recommended CG of 16.8 cm from the LE should be fine (right now it also has a few clicks of up trim). I plan to move it there for the next flight.

For handlaunch I would suggest to initially move the CG to the more forward position (15.8 cm or so from LE) to avoid a possible stall on the maiden.

Re the fan choice issue, I set mine up with the HW-609 fan and Plettenberg 290 for the simple reason that I had one lying around tested and ready to go with controller (on top of that it flew the maiden with about three extra feet of 12 ga wire tucked in on one side ), and the Hacker-MiniFan setup could then fit into something else. It's a proven, very powerful and efficient setup, but not the lightest.

But for the Me-1101 I don't see a reason to go with anything else than the WeMoTec MiniFan 480 and a Hacker B40-11S (or -8L) or Kontronic Fun (480-33 or -42) brushless setup on 10-12 CP 1700, FAUP 1950 or similar cells. It's a perfectly adequate, light, efficient setup with power to spare up to 600-700 Watts ...

Thanks Herb for all the important imformation!

Nick, all kits will be finished and shipped out next Monday, yours included if not sooner. I'll let you know by email if I can ship it before the weekend. I'm getting just a little behind, so much to do and me alone to do it.

Thanks Nick, I'm very pleased and my test builders-pilots did a great job getting them in the air quick with video!

Started a website for the 1101. I'll add building pages, pictures of your finished planes, your flight video's and more.

Just a start, about all I could do at 2 am. I'm sure I made mistakes so let me know.

Here's the link: http://sneill.com/ME1101/

Website looks great Steve, only thing I can see wrong is you've got 'excepted' instead of 'accepted' on the bit about payment methods.

Why not mount a MF480 with a seperate pack on the dolly? You guys would end up driving the dolly around the runway.

My buddy is going to carry up his composite F-16 on a 100" Robin Hood and drop it. He's got an aluminum cradle and a release pin. We tried last week but the pilot of the RobinHood lifted off too early and the torque rolled the airplane to the left and it munched into the ground. We'll try again today. He wants to test the glid characteristics of the F-16, it's got no motor right now, plus it's the first fuse he layed up, it's kinda overweight.

Another suggestion I was thinking about the other week. Use a leftover/discarded raw Me-1101 fuselage, the bottom/front & middle part only. Cut off top and tail so you just get a cup-like bottom half-fuselage piece. Attach a fixed scale-looking gear to it with steerable nose gear. Will fit the Me-1101 fuse like a glove. Retained with steel pins, made to go straight with a gyro, on takeoff it's made to fall off.

Awsome!

Dig the vid Herb. I got lucky and had access to broadband in my hotel room in Florida. Downloaded all of them in a minute. So before i get home and can start mine do you recommend the 609 setup? And how much modification did you need to do, if any, to the tail pipe.

the dolly take off didn't go as planned today. the 1101 shifted on the cradle and came in for a sliding landing. well it didn't really get airborne. i need something to keep it from moving around while accelerating. perhaps a couple of pegs that go up into the wing?.
i think Tex uses that method on his t.f. warbirds.................gregg

Gregg, I don't understand why you just don't use your pedal bungee launcher for the plane. Does it not fit well on the launcher?
