All, I was asked to post this for a new club in the NOVA area. They want to get a large number of flyers to show up in order make a good impression on the county representatives they have been working hard with in order to make this new flying site a reality.
Lenn Park Airfield Grand Opening
At 11:00 am on Saturday, June 5, there will be a Grand Opening celebratrion of the new Culpeper County Lenn Park radio control model flying field. This flying site was made possible by the donation of a tract of land by the Lenn Brothers, which will be developed for ballfields, picnic areas, camping areas, walking trails and the airfield under the supervision of the Culpeper County Parks and Recreation Department. The airfield has been completed first because it was developed by the users, the Culpeper Model Barnstormers (CMB), with no funding provided by the County.
The celebration will start at 11:00 with a flyover of full scale historic airplanes led by CMB president Mike Dale followed by a model aviation demonstration. Then at 12 noon we will have a flag ceremony led by the Boy Scouts, and singing of the National Anthem. We will then take time to acknowledge the contributions and support of the Lenn Brothers, the Culpeper Count Board of Supervisors, the Culpeper County Parks and Recreation Department and the Barnstormers.
The model airplane demonstration will continue with trainers, scale models, helicopters, and high performance models doing exciting low level aerobatics. Then a training session will be held where any youngster can have some stick-time with an experienced pilot flying an RC model.
Model aviation has made significant advances in recent years. Most models now fly almost silently using electric motors for power. There are many "almost ready to fly" models available and there are many good flying economical models, all of which will be demonstrated here. And there will be several "stick-built" scale models, some with wingspans of over 10 feet.
Lunch and drinks will be available. There will be plenty of parking. There will be no rain date.
To get to Lenn Park from Route 3, south of Culpeper, take Stevensburg Road north for approximately 1.5 mile to just past Mountain Run and turn right into the park. To get to Lenn Park from Route 29 take route 666, Greens Corner Road, to a dead-end then turn right onto Stevensburg Road, then go ½ mike and turn left into the Park. Once you are in Lenn Park take the gravel road for approximately ¾ mile and turn left to park at the flying site.
AMA members are welcome to fly at this new RC airfield from 9:00 until the demonstration begins, and after the ceremonies and demonstration are over. We welcome AMA member fliers from all area clubs.
Visitors are all welcome to be a part of this celebration of community cooperation.
