1/2 wavelength antenna for Corona RP8D1

I am going to extend the antenna on my Corona RP8D1, but I have some questions about how to do this. First of all, I noticed that the wire for the antenna is very high guage (small diameter). I have some 22 guage wire at home, but this is bigger than the stuff used on the antenna. Will it hurt to use some of the 22 guage wire to extend the antenna? Also, what length do I need to extend it to in order to reach 1/2 wavelenth?

I know that this is a kind of non-related question, but how far are you guys getting for your range checks with your Corona RP8D1 recievers with the 1/4 wavelenth antennas?

1/2 wavelength- so 1/2 the wavelength of your frequency. Plug some digits in here:

be careful about a smaller guage wire- it will be heavier, and the solder point might not be able to hold it.

I un-soldered the old antenna and soldered a new 1/2 wave antenna on using 22 guage wire. My solder joint appear to be able to hold the wire. I am now getting 130 paces for a range check in an urban environment (compared to the original 90 paces). At this distance, though, there is a noticable delay between when I throttle up and when the motor responds. Is that normal?

I have two Corona RP8D1's and have always noticed a slight delay in servo/throttle response from both, with the normal 1/4 antenna. They're also inncompatible with the Flytron headtracker (causes severe stuttering) and one of them regularly flakes out on me. I like the range and failsafe feature but not the inherent latency, lack of precision and just don't trust them.

Question about impedance... How can this be measured? Idealy, based on IBcrazy's remarks in the above thread, you want to maintain a 50ohm load on the the receiver. Where about do you measure from and to? I'd like to extend my RP8D1's to 1/2 wave also, but want to tinker to get it as good as I can.

Or, instead of measuring impedance, do we measure RSSI on a range test to find the best real-world results at various lengths? (i mean 1/2 wavelength +/- a few inches to compensate for base-loading)

if it can be useful, i've been suggested to choose the antenna length meanwhile measuring RSSI...

is this right?
