A nice 'Toni from Pete Bergstrom. Pete always finished his models real well. The other photo is of Walt Chickmoroff. His model is a 'Rickey Rat'. Which was a 'Shoestring'.

Send him my regards. I've just about run out of Formula One photos apart from the brief UK revival. Next up some Club 20. The best class ever?

Vintage pylon question

Ok,so those are real cool pics!!I got a question for you.Back in the day,was radio failure an issue?I am sure it was to some extent, but I am thinking it was a big problem with only AM chanells available, but then again, there wasn`t as many objects creating interference back then.

Radio failure really ceased to be a problem once high quality radios from Futaba and Sanwa (and later on JR) arrived. More of a problem was when two pilots decided to fly on the same frequencies. Big race events had strict Tx control but some of the smaller ones did not.

They do seem to. Last time I watched control line Team Race at the Nats everyone seemed to be over 60! Much like I suspect EF-1 will be in the UK.

Just a few more pictures - this time from Southern California. At the time in the North West 1 min 15 secs was considered a good time but Dave Shadel was running 1 min 05 secs at this meeting at Modesto. Don't forget this is 20 years ago!
The first photo is of the pits at Modesto. Far right Jim Shinohara is walking back with one of Dave Shadel's models. The young lady centre right may be Nancy Rutherford although by this time married with a different name. Centre under the blue awning sitting down in a red shirt and white cap is Dub Jett.
The second photo shows Bruce and Brian Richmond carrying out some last minute surgery on Brian's DeNight Special.
The third photo is of Gary Hover and his Loki and I think Scott Manning.
The fourth photo is a Team Samurai F3D Stiletto taken that year at Whittier Narrows. The US was just starting to get interested in F3D following Shadel's win at the World Championships - actually a clean sweep for the US with Dub Jett and Brian Richmond completing the first three. The Stiletto was from a Gary Hover fuselage and wing cores.

Actually, that young lady is my wife (now), back then my girlfriend Cathy Waters, the daughter of Pete Waters (Kraft Midwest, and former rc pilot from Wales). We took the trip out to Modesto for the Champ race, and got to hang out with the Samurai crew. What a great time.

OK Dan sorry about the misidentification. You will have to excuse me. Its twenty years ago and the memory isn't what it was. Great weekend though.

No issues, it is tough for me to think 20 yrs back as well. That was the contest where I met Dave English and we all went out to dinner, I think Olive Garden. Dave Shadel, Jimmy, BUCKWHEAT, Dave English, and Cathy and I. I was young then and these OLD Farts embarassed both Cathy and I with their antics. Jimmy cut all the strings to balloons as we were escorted to the table, I had to wear a shower cap during dinner and too many other stories to share.

Ahhh remember it well, That was the race that I had the yellow and green airplane that Jimmy built for me and gave me such a hard time about! That Chevy thunder big rig in the back ground was a buddy of mine on their way back from San Francisco where they had a stadium off road race.

DK, We werent embarrasing back then....were we?

You guys are bringing back alot of memories for me.Jim Shinohara lived down the hill from me off main street and was sponsoring Steve Sica and Keith Davidson when the were kitting the D&S Ricky Rat. I beleive Jims daughter was the one that painted the Old Rat waiving a checkered flag on the wing. I can remember going to Adolf and Steve Sicas house off of Orange ave in San Diego to talk shop and going to Ocean Beach to visit Harley Condra. We would have 1/4 midget and F1 races down at are field on Monument road and drive up to Wittier Narrows, Mile Sguare,Sepulvada Basin and of course Bakersfield.
Terry Prather would always come by and say Hi along with Tom Christopher, Chuck and Bruce Brown. This was back in the mid 70's in SoCal.

After reading your post I had to go back and find the picture of the "RAT". It's not a very good scan but here it is.
