Veron Cobra 17 -help requested

Does anyone know anything about the Veron cobra 17 it has a glass fus and 122" wingspan, described as a semi-scale Polish sailplane. It looks a bit like an elongated vortex,. Have ben offerered one unbuilt boxed for 150 - I would really appreciate any thoughts on this plane and this offer, as I had never heard of it before.

Didn't remember just how old the Cobra was, had to go back a long way. I too had found Ads in the 80's but found back to 78 and finally 76. Veron let the Cobra escape round the same time as the Big Eagle which seems to be March76 but they didn't show it in early adverts, must have thought the price would frighten many away. Started showing pics. in Aug.77 and last ones seem to be Oct.81

Regards Ian.

Thanks for all the responses!
As some of you may know, Phil Smith (Veron chief designer) still works hard at the age of 95!
I rang him a few days ago and his wife says he is ill, so I couldn't get any details from him(I have his address should anyone wish, he sells veron plans which also gives diecutpart outlines).
What I would like to know is, was the cobra good - like the vortex- which was a real floater and a best seller?
Does it have any retail value and reputation - as it is a bit big just to keep as part of a collection?
Thanks

Veron Cobra

Hi Ali

A Cobra was offerred for auction at the Great Southern Model Aucton in Romsey, Hants last year, I don't think it made its (low) reserve (!)

The problem with the Cobra as I remember was that it was rudder/elevator (and, I think, featured an aileron conversion on the plan) It wasn't big enough or light enough to be an out-and-out floater and just didn't look scale enough in flight in rudder/elevator guise. Definitely one to stay in the box as an investment

The Vortex 100" however was a whole different ballgame - slick styling, effortless soaring performance. I still have one and fly it at the Ivinghoe Nostalgia Day event(s) in September each year along with a Graupner Cirrus ah yes now, the Cirrus! I'm currently building a set of aileron wings to go on a brand new fuselage I picked up last year so I can have a pair of them for people to borrow and fly on Nostalgia Day 2010

Perhaps I might re-cover the Vortex as well....

Regards

Pete

Did you take the 1/8" off the T/E of the Vortex to make it 100s legal Pete??

Regards Ian.

Thanks once again, and especially circlip for the review.
I won't be buying it it! Too fiddley to build, and not worth the trouble anyway, by the sound of it. Unusual for Veron to release a "dud".
The chap selling it lives near Romsey - perhaps it is the same one!
I shall continue to crawl through ebay for a Vortex - I alwayls loved the look of it,but couldn't of hoped to afford it when it was first released!

I picked up a Veron Cobra at the club swapmeet this weekend, donated very kindly by a clubmate who needed the space. I'm looking forward to trying her out on the slope in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for posting the RM review - very informative.

Veron Cobra

Just seen this thread about the Cobra. I had a fuse and cockpit given to me by Colin Smith, the designer's son, and ask if I would like to build it which I did last year. I made scale size airelons, reduced the dihedral to a 1" under each wingtip added electric airbrakes(top of wing only) and built the wing with washout in it. I built the tailplane/ elevator to the scale size and placed the servos in the fin for both rudder and elevator. The big question is how did it it fly? Once trimmed out by a fellow flyer, who doesn't fly my mode, it flew beautifully. I am not a slope soarer more of an electric flat field scale flyer. I flew for about 15-20 mins in the Purbecks in a 8-14mph wind, it was the dogs !!!!???@@'s, I even landed it on the spot using the airbrakes of course, everyone ther was quite impressed by its looks and nostalgia. Done properly this is not a dud but a fair bit of deviation fron the original will bring it up to scatch.
Incidently I know where the original moulds are and also Colin Smith still sells the plans.
