Build Log
Strict Microcraft (Complete with Video)

After making plans for a hovercraft on Google SketchUp, I submitted them to a friend to be laser cut. It is cut from 3mm (1/8") sheets of balsa. This is a 2 day build log. My deadline is tomorrow night.

Specifications so far:
name - Strict Microcraft
length without skirt - 215mm (8.5")
width without skirt - 130mm (5")
lift fan - 30mm brushed EDF
receiver/servo - ar6400
thrust fan - still in debate
battery - Hyperion 120mah 25c 1s lipo
skirt material - with the close deadline, most likely trash bag plastic
all up weight (AUW) - hopefully less than 40 grams
desire the ability to run on water

My project is for Stem Fair sooo... yep.

If this is a success, I will most likely be attempting a sub 4" hovercraft. My goal would be 3.5" max length ready to run. Strict Nanocraft...

My lift fan will be an Airhogs E-Chargers EDF, and my thrust fan will be a 8.4mm Parkzone UM P51 motor with a slightly trimmed GWS 2510 prop.

I have some soldering to do for the lift fan. The thrust fan is just about finished. All that is left is to cut the prop down and smoothen out the duct. It is fully thrust vectoring.

The only real challenge is to find the right shape for the corner pieces. I hope the bubble wrap isn't too stiff. I also hope my lift fan has enough power.

I don't like skirts... Other than that all I have to do is make the body.

hey

That hovercraft is really cool! I lived in Charlotte Amalie for about three months and worked at a dive shop there in the harbor. Water World Outfitters, it was a few years ago. Where on the Island do you live?

I watched the video, and it was awesome! Wow!

It looked like it was manuevering very well on a smooth floor. How would it do hovering on a carpet or rough surface, do you think it will move the same?

It isn't large enough to go over anything bigger than a crumb. Think about it this way. Carpet to my little craft is like boulders to tue fullsize cargo or military crafts.

I have plans, but it maybe a while before I could upload. I can't wait to go sub-4".

thats the main problem with micro hovercraft, they need a very smooth surface to run on like concrete or hardwood.
i'd like to make a small skirtless hovercraft that has enough airflow to sit up off the ground at least 1/2 inch. i tried, but stability was a problem. something like the Avrocar is what i'd like

You would need separate lift fans spread apart in order to achieve proper stability. But the distance between fans would probably have to be so great that you miht lose the micro factor. I'm still waiting for a Micro9 to make a sub-4"er.
