Sorry for delay. I was busy with repairing of Armstrong and next mods of the Bixler.
Flaps I made have incredible lift and some drag as well. As I'm beginner first I learned is safe landing before flaps. I know what speed, altitude will needed to land where I want. With flaps (has only 1 position - 100%) Bixler can fly another 100-200 meters with the same (more or less) conditions.
I found them very useful when I toss the plane in air. It almost doesn't have negative vertical speed during gaining of safe airspeed. When she is 10m above the ground I switching off the flaps.
Be careful with landing with them against wind, plane is much less stable.
So, for your purpose of gliding with some additional lift 3 position switch should be programmed via mixing in a way when in middle position you will have about 20-25% of flaps deployment and in down position 100% of deployment. IMHO

Before I botch my plane, does anyone have any guides to cutting nice holes for ducts (using the molds from parkflyerplastics)? I've heard something about a hot spoon approach, but I was planning on just using a sharp hobby knife, a straight edge (if at all possible), and taking my time cutting.

It's getting a bit confusing now with three different sizes of Sky Surfers, more than one version of the original mid sized SkyS, the 800mm/31.5 inch and 1280mm/50.5 inch FMS Easy Trainers (oddly also sold at BH), and the Bixler 2 that's larger than the original Bixler. Plus more places to buy the SkyS now, with Nitroplanes selling the AeroSky Skysurfer, yet (also oddly) also sells an AirWing Wingsurfer (in red, blue or green decals), which is only 1372mm/54" wingspan.
And Hobby Lobby just announced their Sky Surfer to go on sale soon.

Who makes the FMS Easy Trainers and AirWing Wingsurfer and how do they compare to the SykS and Bixler?

Maybe the main details of all these planes can be added to the first post.

Also, BH's page for the SkyS says new version 5 coming soon.

Hi.

BrianL, those Sky Surfers are both version two which is what I have. I can't find the v2 anywhere in Australia now (without paying $AU300 off ebay for the RTF) which is sad in terms of finding spare parts. Only viable option is the Bixler v1.1. I would love to buy the basic v2 kit so I can play around with the ailerons without worrying as much about stuffing them up if things go badly. It is a little more relevant now as my dog stepped on one of the wings on the ground and one aileron has torn half way along the foam hinge. I used the excellent tape hinge method here to fix it:

On a second note, I finally got around to removing the nose weight from my Sky Surfer and I have attached an image of it on some scales. It makes a MASSIVE difference to the CG when using a 2200mah battery. It is perfectly balanced now and flies brilliantly. My 1500 batteries feel a little light now and I have to use a bit more stick to keep my desired flightpath in wind (20kmh). The CG with the 1500 is closer to 65mm from the leading edge which is not too bad but obviously contributes to the reduced stability and penetration in wind.

For those with a v2, removing the nose weight and then placing the 2200 battery pushed forward and resting on the little separator/fuse reinforcement bridge thingy inside (you know what I mean if you have one) works perfectly.

Nice video nakelp86. She looks real smooth.

I thought you were going to slalom around those lite poles a few times.

Cant get cg right on my bixler

Good evening,

I just put together a bixler 1400 , which I got from hk. Pretty sure it is a version 1.1 . The only real mod is that I mounted the elevator and rudder servos in the fuselage near the tail. I have a 2200kv motor on the aluminum motor mount with a 6x5.5 prop.

But I am having a heck of a time finding the right cg spot. Here is what I have tried so far. Cg from leading edge

60mm _ nose dives into ground at 70% throttle
70mm _ nose dives into ground art 70% throttle

Ok, this is frustrating so I moved cg back to 90 mm. I was able to launch at 40% throttle and fly pretty well at 40% throttle. If I increase throttle to 60% it starts to nose down.

Can a newb get some experienced feedback, what is going on? And suggestions for fixing.

Thanks!

I'll leave the knowledgeable reply to the experts, but if you are nose diving then I would say that your cg needs to move closer to the leading edge, not further away.

Also check your elevator in the neutral position. If it is nose diving with 60mm cg then I would suggest that you have some down elevator in the neutral position or some other unusual anomaly (bent fuse?). Even the tiniest amount of elevator misalignment will affect the flight.

Also check the elevator position with all the power plugged in as the servo may be trimmed with some down elevator.

Another oddity is the fact that as you increase throttle, it noses down. Mine (and most other planes I believe) flies flat until high throttle at which point it wants to nose up.

Another reason may be that the horizontal stabiliser may be incorrectly placed at an angle with some "nose down" effect.
