Great Planes Matt Chapman Eagle 580 GP/EP ARF 53"

Tower is running an awesome price on the 53" version of the Chapman Eagle 580. $164 delivered to my door... I own the 50" and 100" version. Was not planning on getting the 53" but had the motor and ESC and thought what the heck!. About 4 months ago I built one for a friend and I really liked how it turned out. I noticed there are no build threads for the 53", only the 50". So I thought why not start one.

Here is the plane I will be building:

Viperjody-
I fly the 50" version and I like it-
Are you going with the glow or electric on this one?
Looking forward to your build thread!

I built one for a friend a while back.. He flies it on 6s and it flies awesome... fairly decent 3d handling. Great pattern flyer, a gentle lander. He is running the same motor with a 15x8 prop. It was an easy build and the plane has held up really well. I am looking forward to cataloging the build.

I am the friend and Jody did a terrific job building mine. I love it! Nice size, flies extremely well with plenty of power, highly responsive. It can handle some 3D but it's definitely more of a sport/aerobatic flyer. Here's some shots that Jody took. Such a good looking plane, always a favorite of mine to fly.

Where are you guys at in washington? There has been a group of 5 or so of us that has been meeting at local fields ( marymoor, sixty acres, various parks...) if you are interested I can point you to the thread. The cap looks great, as an Embry-Riddle alum it'd be great to see this model in person.

We fly mostly at Lake Sawyer Hawks in Issaquah/Maple Valley...Jody is a member of the Marymoor club and we both fly there as well (the photos are at Marymoor). We would be happy to meet up and bring our Chapman's!

Since I have some extra JR Servos laying around, going to run DS821 on the Ailerons and a JR DS8611a on the Rudder and perhaps another 821 on the Elevator.

Wings Done

Yesterday I finished up the wings... it is so nice that the wings are pre-hinged and ready to go, all that is required is to mount the servo and servo horn and measure and bend the piano wire. everything comes in the kit, including all of the hardware. All and all, it took about 30 minutes per wing. Nice carbon fiber wing tube.

Installed the rudder and tail wheel assembly. The rudder is the only thing you have to hinge on this plane and it is easy. I always use a pin vise drill to make a small 1/16" hole in each hinge slot so that the CA can make a good contact. It allows the the CA to get into the hinge material better as well.

I ran into a small snag fitting the tail wheel assembly into the pre-slotted hole. it was too small... A little exacto knife work and she was as good as new.
