I guess shapeable plastic such as KYDEX could be used instead of aluminum. I might give that once I get my Skywalker. I like the idea though.

First let me say how much I appreciate everyone who contributes to this thread. Much thanks to: Daemon, Ssassen, Vantasstic, and countless others. I have learned sooo much here. The knowledge here definitely served as a great foundation for my Skywalker project. Unfortunately I need to stop this project mid-stream. Just too many projects, too little time and money

If your interested in seeing some of the mods I've made or even interested in taking the project over check out my post in the FS section http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1476329. One of the mods is unique involving a hatch / shelf for mounting all the FPV electronics making them super easy to pull out and access.

I'm afraid I'm too mentally invested in this one so I may be a lurker here for some time/ . Thanks again!

Thanks
Chris

Yes, Kydex is very lovable indeed. I'm still surprised that it's not more widely used within the RC community.

Skywalker in the clouds...

FPV Skywalker in the clouds (4 min 16 sec)

Hey all. I finally had my Skywalker up in some clouds this weekend. I flew yesterday with the GoPro just taking stills, during a 40min flight and today, the video was rolling...

The SW is a nice upgrade from the TS II I had before. I'm getting a UHF RC link in the very near future as well as looking forward to upgrading the current 900 mhz vid setup I have...always sumpin'!

Also, I did a 21k distance flight earlier this week, my new personal best. I have the recorded GS vid, but I was fighting 2.4ghz glitches and not so clear video, but I had to power through it, thanks to the confidence in my RVOSD setup.

Also, earlier in the week, I was up doing some testing and I wanted to watch the sun set, but that meant I had to loiter around for more than I had the juice for. Ended up putting 3884mah back into my 4S 4000 battery...Nice flights though!
Thanks for watching,

Joe

Well, this Skywalker V4 build has just taken a turn south.
Now that the glue is nice and dry, I see my tail is crooked as heck; its got a 5-7 degree lean to the right

I can go about fixing it two ways:
Shim the right side of the horizontal stab which will still result in a crooked vertical stab, or I can "gently" heat the area with a heat gun and hope I can twist it back to shape without screwing up the overall straightness of the boom.

I emailed BEVRC for some advice

Don't try to use a heat gun. It won't heat a high enough volume of foam to be useful.
This is what you do. Tape over the servos in the tail to protect em best you can.
Then take a wash cloth or dish towel, fold it over a couple times (4 layers of cloth)
and lay it over the area you want to heat. Heat up a pot of water to just short
of boiling (if you've got a thermometer, you want it about 175F) and then poor
the hot water over the cloth and let it heat the whole area for 5-10 seconds or so,
then while it's still hot, take the cloth off and twist the boom (or bend the vertical)
the way you want. Will probably have to twist it somewhat further, and let it spring
back as it cools. Repeat as necessary until it's fixed. If you feel the surface of
the foam start to bubble up, the water is too hot. Below 160F is not hot enough, but
boiling water is a little too hot. For something like the tail, you have to let the
heat really "soak in" so it's hot throughout.

This same trick can be used to straighten dented/damaged/repaired noses
on the SW (and all Multiplex Elapor planes), bent wing tips and so forth. It'll make
scratches and dents in the foam pop back out to near original shape and smoothness.
For just scratches and dents in the wing, I use a thick paper towel (Scott blue shop
towels) folded twice, soak it under the faucet, lay flat directly on the wing and then
heat with a regular clothes iron on the steam setting until the surface is smooth.
You're not ironing the dents out, just using it to heat the water in the towel, and
the steam regulates the temperature.
