Martin Mars Project
I was going to holdoff doing this thread until the plane was completed but what the heck.
I started construction of the Martin Mars from Ivan Pettigrew's plan in February. Construction started with the tail feathers and then halted for about 4 months and then resumed again in May. She is completely framed up to this point but there is still more to go. Wiring of the motors, servo's, and other electronics still has to be done along with LOTS of sanding and sealing for water op's.
I have approximately 80 to 100 hours into her at this stage (recent pic). Her stats are as follows:
Wingspan: 120 Inches
Length: 72 Inches
AUW: 10 pounds
Wing Area: 1515 sq. in.
Wing Loading: 15.7 oz/sq. ft.
Airfoil: Eppler 197 with NACA leading edge droop on outboard wing sections.
Power: Kyosho Mag Mayhems with 3.5:1 Master airscrew Gearboxes and 8 MAS 10x7 props notched at the center to make the 4 blade props. 18 cells of 1700 to 3000 Nicad/Nimh.
Ivan's plane is the Hawaii Mars for those of you who don't know of it. My plane will be the Philippine Mars. Both these aircraft are used as water bombers in Canada and are based at Sproat Lake.
She has been quite a project for me since this is only my third scratch built model. My first scratch built was Mark Rittingers Sportwin. Second was Anton Eisel's Seawind. I hope to have her flying by August for the Chilliwack Fly In in Canada this summer. I'll keep you posted on her progress and welcome any comments.

Was Ivan's plan published or did you get it from him through a personal association?
Lovely airplane. I would love to see (and hear) the real one someday. They won't be around forever.

And I notice your wife does not get to park in the garage, as mine does not. : )
I am saddened in that my Canadair willnot be completed in time for the July 12-13 water contest at Pine Hollow, this year. So there is Next year, right?

I purchased them from him directly.
I just might have her ready for her maiden by mid July if all goes well. I was pushing for late August but it appears that I have built her faster than I expected. Looking forward to seeing your Canadair "in the flesh" sometime next year if not sooner wink, wink.
Waiting for the motors and gearboxes right now. After they arrive, then I can run all the wiring, closeup the leading edge sheeting, and do all the final finish sanding. Then to the covering and paint.

Does Ivan sell a range of plans for his lovely planes? If so, where does he advertise?

Ivan does sell his plans but I don't know for sure what plans he has for sale. He does not advertise and to contact him, you must email him. Contact me directly for more info.

Perry, got some pics for yopu, but haven't had time to scan them yet. I'll get them off to you within a week.
Gordon, Ivan really doesn't sell his plans all that often, and only usually does it in person. He only does rough drawings, then does the rest in his head, and his construction techniques are "unconventional" throughout. Sorry to rain on your parade.

I hope to have her done by the August fly in up your way. If not, she'll be ready for a full year of flying in 2004 and WILL be in Chilliwack on both occasions! Got to get the two Mars together for a fly. That would make a great photo shot now wouldn't it?
