Collection of my 4G6 DIY mods (Crash proofing, canopy, peformance boosts, etc)

Hi all!

First of all, I'm new to this forums! However, I'm already 3 months into this hobby and exclusively flown only Walkera helicopters, far mostly with the 4G6..

I maybe a newb, but as an aviation enthusiast, I'm not, and designed, built and flown my first powered, free-flight plank at the age of nine, built out of recycled materials. I earned a degree in Manufacturing Engineering and worked as IT specialist. My hobbies has been mostly in the field of aeronautics and aerospace propulsion. I'm also an amateur science researcher and inventor - only as a hobby, I don't get paid for it!

Anyway, here's the collection of the mods I designed myself, it was never a piece of cake as the 4G6 is proving to be quit a challenge to improve upon using off-the-shelf items from the house:

High performance crash proof blade redesign

Anti-tail gear stripping mod

http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.ph...1&postcount=26

High Performance Evaporative Active cooling solution for the stock motor

http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.ph...0&postcount=33

High Performance Canopy design

http://helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=196542

Modding 4#3b/CB100 servo to work as tail servo(higher performance than stock tail servo!)

http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.ph...5&postcount=29

More to come! Thanks!

No problem!

The first link especially will give your 4G6 longer flight times, higher performance and an especially crash-resilient blade that will probably take several crashes before you need to R&R only the tip(not the whole blade! ) which virtually costs nothing btw and easy enough to R&R.

But all in all, turns your 4G6 into a crash and pick up CCPM heli!

Hey, could you post your mods on this forum in one thread? i clicked your links but found a load more to click, click those and you have even more to click, you must have loads of threads open on helifreak but much better to have it all in one place here.

Try looking at post #1 now

You still need to click links with the canopy link though because if I gave you direct link, you won't see the other canopy liveries, cheers!

You are missing the problem but dont worry.

It would be ideal if the articles you link to (5 of them) were posted here as one.
If they were posted here it would be ideal if they were all in one thread.

The objectivve being that myself and others can read through a thread which had all the details and pictures and guides etc in it instead of chasing them around the net.

Thanks a lot for posting all your experiments Timewerx, I for one appreciate them. Particularly the blade-related ones.

My 4G3 is out of commission at the moment, so I'm toying a around a bit with what I can do to make it fly better. I've got a few cheap wooden blade off of Ebay for like 2$ a pair. I've already removed the lead off of a pair and replaced it with hot glue and it removed a bit of weight. Soon I'll try to find some vinyl tape somewhere to crash 'proof' their tips but I can't say I've seen that stuff anywhere before. Would that be the stuff they strip cars with?

I get what you mean now, I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

Sounds like it, but it's not. Vinyl tape is often times used for cable/electrical chord repair/joining. This is the tape you wrap around the point where you joined/solder two chord/cables together to insulate it.

You may be able to find them from hardware stores like Ace or electronic components/hobby store. But you may not have to bother with them. This another one of my blade repair/crash proofing kit is better and don't require vinyl!

Ok, we call it electrical tape here, hence the confusion. I've got plenty of that stuff (being an 'handy' man :P).

Your new blade design wouldn't work for wooden blades, would it? They don't have the carbon rod so I'm not sure if it'd be strong enough. I could retro fit some carbon rods into the ends of them, but drilling straight into the blade and making the rod stick out straight would be quite the challenge.

Edit: Oh I see you've linked to a different post of yours, I assumed it was the radical mod. I'll check it out, thanks.
