Wow! What a difference!

I resized the end of the thrust tube to around 1.5" and it flew like a totally different model. Hand launches are much easier and smoother and it climbs 100% better than it did before. It is now enjoyable to fly.

Amazing how a little change can have such a large impact.

Is this typical or normal for an EDF or one with a smallish 50mm fan? Compared to my prop planes, the difference is significant and very noticeable.

I am running 2200mAh packs, both 25 and 30C. I am wondering if going down to an 1800 to save some weight would help. From the specs though, we're looking at under 1 oz difference between the two, so I'm not sure whether this would provide a noticeable improvment or not.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Larry

Hey Lardog,

I don't at this time, but I can take some. What are you specifically interested in seeing?

Don: I didnt see this thread yet. I already ordered some 3s1300 20c packs for this plane and the wemo/5.4k combo. Are these batteries going to be sufficient? Also I am going to have to add a ton of weight to the front in order to achieve a better CG?

Would I be better off buying some 1500 or 1800 packs?

A 1300 20C pack will be pushing it. The motor/fan will draw close to the packs rated capacity. Conventional wisdom says most packs are over rated. I would suggest a 30C in that size.

Yes, you will need to add weight in the nose. Either that or move the motor & fan forward from its original position. With a 2200 pack, I still had to add 1.5 oz. Overall, the plane was just too heavy. I didn't fly it with a smaller, lighter pack, so that might make a difference, but overall, I was underwhelmed.

Honestly my suggestion is not to modify the F86 instead get one of the other 50mm jets. This F86 is just not worth the mods in my opinion as it needs a lot of nose weight and even with the extra power of 4S it is nothing special. The F16 is the best 50mm model so far with the Wemo 5400 combo. if you have the F86 fly it stock for what it is and put the wicked wemo in one of the other jets and save yourself the aggravation. That is my honest opinion on this plane.

Well, that answered my question. I was thinking of making the airframe I have now into a pusher prop, and get a new one to do the Wicked Wemo mod. But if it ain't worth the trouble......

I just really like the F-86.

I am contemplating putting a different fan unit into it like a 60 mm fan and moving it forward to help with the CG.

I bet with a 60 mm and 3S with less watts it will go faster. Now I am debating a new airframe or hacking up the current one.

I thought you sold you previous one?

Bulldog,
Did you put a 60mm fan in one of these? Care to share some info on how you fit it in?

Thanks,
Larry
