I have both and have to agree with you the Champ is a better flier.. For my type of flying,,,slow and scale like.. touch and goes, low passes..

Another vote for the Champ. The J-3 has a much more narrow speed range to keep it happy. Fly it too slow or allow airspeed to drop in the turns and the J-3 falls out of the air. The champ doesn't care, fast or slow it just wants to fly. It literally hangs in the air. My biggest problem with the Champ is keeping it at reasonable altitude. It rides thermals like a sailplane.

Agree with Livonia Bob... Champ>J-3 all around. Have both... like the J-3 but love the Champ.

Has anyone found a good way to pull the wing off the fuselage?

Since you already have the J-3, maybe you could look into buying all the parts for the airframe for the Champ and swapping out the electronics from the J-3. I haven't added it up but it would probably be cheaper than buying a new plane.

I priced this out and it was about $40 to build a Champ... but then you think to yourself "for only $49 more I get a RX, TX, battery, charger, warranty... and no assy required"

I have about mastered my Champ. Would the micro p51 be a good next step? I'm a little on the fence because I have never flown anything with ailerons. Anyway got in 30 more minutes of Champ flying today and this plane is such a good slow flyer!

The UMP51 can be pretty squirrely as can the sukhoi and ARE A LOT FASTER lol. Attention is needed when flying those planes but it can be done!

If you set your expectations reasonably you can probably fly the Mustang with some success. If there is a better intermediate step I too would like to know about it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm actually not even sure I really want anything faster or more agile than the Champ. I like just flying it slow and floating around. I might just spend the extra money to get a backup Champ instead of trying my luck with the p51.
