Build Log
3D Hobby Shop 65" BIG Vyper Build Thread

Hey all! During the last 4 weeks or so I have assembled and flown the 3DHS 65" Vyper. And all I can say is... WOW. In my experience the big Vyper has been the single most pleasurable build to date, and has been nothing short of -astonishing- in the air. This has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had during the over 15 years I have been building and flying RC model aircraft. Could not be happier!

I will now be detailing the build with some good close-up pictures and commentary. Want more information pertaining to a section of the build? More pictures? Any question please feel free to ask!

Are you wondering why I located the build thread for the 3D Hobby Shop 65" Vyper in the Sport Planes section? Well, a lot has been said about the Vipers’ 3D "hucking" ability already. But this is really the first of a TRUE HYBRID aircraft to hit the market, the real deal. The Vyper has amazing precision and sport flying abilities. After the build log is complete, we will be working to get some further information and video displaying the forgiving sport/precision nature of the Vyper. And yes, some 3D stuff... I can't help myself!?

With a simple flip of a switch from high to low control rates, you have yourself an elegant, smooth sport flying machine!

Note: I want to take this opportinity to thank Rob at ADC Hobby Store for the amazing DIAMOND PLATE graphics for the Vyper! Check them out, top notch!

Covering:

Let's take a look at the covering.

The first item I like to tackle in a build is the covering. I took a moment to remove some MINOR wrinkles from the covering using my iron and heat gun. Very few wrinkles were present.

I then removed covering with a hot knife where instructed in the manual.

Important Note: I chose not to use the included rudder Pull-Pull system. I located the rudder servo on the aft fuselage to assist with proper CG location.

Rudder Installation:

The rudder and elevator require the builder to glue the hinges in place. The builder can use either Polyurethane Glue ("Sumo or Gorilla") or 30-min. epoxy to get the job done.

I have recently become acquainted with Polyurethane Glues; in particular I like "Sumo Glue". PU glue (as it is commonly referred to) will expand as it dries filling any internal gaps resisting gravity to further increase the strength of a given installation.

Quick HOW TO use PU glue: (Using hinge installation as the example)
1) Apply Vaseline to hinge joint using cotton swab.
2) Lightly wet all holes with water.
3) Squeeze in a small amount PU glue into all hinge holes.
4) Install hinges.
5) Wipe away glue as it expands and foams using denatured alcohol. (Keep an eye on it and wipe as required for the first 10-20 mins)
6) Allow to fully cure.

I then used the same method to install all control horns.

Hinge gap sealing:

I like to seal all hinge gaps on my high performance airplanes. This is a personal preference, and I again chose to do so on the Vyper.
My gap seal of choice is Blenderm Tape. I have found it to be extremely forgiving and easy to apply. See pictures below for further information.

The ailerons come factory installed and sealed. This is a huge time saver!

Rudder Servo Installation:

The control system hardware used on the Vyper is very high quality. The ball links provide an ultra smooth and secure bearing surface for those precision maneuvers!

Important Note: I chose not to use the included rudder Pull-Pull system. I located the rudder servo on the aft fuselage to assist with proper CG location. Personal preferance.

See pics below for details.

Horizontal Stabilizer / Elevator Installation:

Time to install the horizontal stab and elevators. Often one of the most feared steps when building a model airplane, we need not worry any more. 3DHS has taken much of the work out of this step.

Builders Note: Do NOT remove covering from center section of stab for installation. It is proven that thin CA will form a permanent bond between fuselage structure and horizontal stab covering. Quick, easy... no epoxy mess!

Glue elevator hinges using previously mentioned technique.

See pics below for installation details.

Final Set-UP:

1) Center of Gravity Checks.
-The instruction manual calls for a CG of 170-180mm behind leading edge of wing at root for maiden, sport and precision flight.
-Using your chosen battery pack, slide lipo fore and aft until maiden CG is obtained.
-Balance aircraft in inverted position.
-Once satisfied with battery position, apply supplied Velcro to battery tray and secure with hold down straps.

2) Tie up loose ends.
-Secure loose wiring using zip ties or preferred method for a clean installation.

3) Adjust and set all control throws as specified in the assembly manual.
-I found both the specified low and high rates to be right on for my flying.

4) Perform final pre-flight checks:
-Check ALL flight controls are operating in the correct direction. EVERY FLIGHT! ;-)
-Quick full power motor run-up check.
-GO FLY!

I reserved the next few posts for upcoming videos, in flight pics, and further information pertaining to sport/precision flying the Vyper.

Hopefully the weather here in Colorado will cooperate next week and allow us to FINALLY get some good in flight video.
