Show Day

Umi;
Today is show day, I will post some pics later today or early tommorrow. If I didn't know better, I would think that I am in Portland!!! Prediction for Rain ALL DAY!
First time in 12 years that it has not been Sunny & Bright.
We did a 2 hour TV Promo on Friday AM, so maybe people will still show up despite the weather.
Good thing is that we have an idoor area for the display, just won't have a lot of oppurtunity to be running boats.
Later;
George

Boat show follow up

It was a dark and dreary day, with a constant threat of rain....as a result both participation and spectators were down from previous years, but all in all still a fun day.
Below are some photos from the event.

Here is the Welcome table as you entered the display area. I think we did manage to signup 8-9 new members.

Spectators

Here is a shot of the people watching the events on the water, during a break in the rain. The building to the right is where the display area was located.

Wow, that is quite a crowd of spectators.
How many years has that show been running?
How was the show advertised?

We would love to put on a show that could draw
such a crowd.

Boat Show

UMI:
We have several distinct advantages over a lot of clubs. I'll bore you a little bit:
First off this was our 12th annual show.

This club was created when the City of Edina needed to build a park as a buffer between Commercial and Residential property ( a long time city policy). Since the property was an old gravel pit the city decided to go with a park six blocks long, and designed in, three man made lakes connected by channels. They also decided that a boat club would be a good use of the park and help to draw people into the park. In 1991 they had the City Attorney file papers to create a non-profit orgnization called the Edina Model Yacht Club. Then they went to the local hobby shop and got a list of interested people. 12 years later we have a club of 140 members from around the area.. We get tremendous support from the City and the Park Manager. We have access to all of the Park buildings, including a work/storage area in the Garage. For any events we are given free use of the main building(normally a rented facility), access to tables, chairs, tents, PA systems, utility trucks, virtually anything we can think of is made available. Park employees provide help in set-up and tear down at our events. We do use all three lakes, the north pond is used for Sail Boat Racing, the Center Pond is our Scale & Open boating area, the South pond is for Fast Electric Racing. We do use all 3 ponds simultaneously, and have had no problems with radio interference.
We hold "Open Boating" every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evening, from about 5:00PM until the batteries run out ( somewhere after 10:PM) from late April into November) November thru March we run Ice Boats, the city keeps the ice plowed and shaved for ice skating. On a typical Open Boating nite we will have 20- 30 members with scale boats on the Center Pond, 10-20 Sailors on the North Pond and 8-10 FE'rs on the South Pond. At the center pond we typically draw 50-100 spectators each night that we are there. Less for sailing and FE. The fact that we stick to a frequent schedule of Open Boating spreads the word that there is free worthwhile family entertainment at the Park. Most of our Scale boats have squirt guns mounted and the kids just love being squirted with dirty pond water! We make an effort to talk with the spectators about the hobby, and most members will allow people to run their boats for short periods. After a while, word of mouth has spread all over the area about our activities and a lot of people come every night that we are there just becasue they enjoy watching. And of course they bring friends who brings friends etc. If our Parade Of Boats gets good weather we will draw 4 to 5 thousand people into the Park for that show over a five hour period. We have caused major traffic and parking issues in some years, and the local Restaurants have told us that they have run out of food on the day of the show.
For our Show we generally get coverage by all four local TV stations, most of the radio stations, all of the local papers and magazines. We are lucky to have the PR Mgr for the State DNR agency as a club member and he has unbelievable media contacts. We blitz the media with an advertising package for a month prior to the show and it really pays off. Typically we will tape Promos on all of the morning News shows the 3-4 days before the show. That of course means getting members down to the pond as early as 5:00 AM so the TV shows can run live broadcasts from the pond usually the Wed, Thurs, Friday and Sat mornings just before the show. On the day of the show all of the TV stations send crews to tape the days activites and show those on the Sunday night news. We will go to any length to accomadate the media once we get their attention.
We also do Lighthouse Night in August, we participate with the local Antique & Classic Boat Club (Full size stuff) at their events.
Other than that we don't do much but sail boats.....

You guys definitly have an unfair advantage, and I
must congradulate you on your efforts.

The park district around Portland Oregon promotes ducks and duck habitat, and duck poo...
And the local model boat club here left the pond before we got our events started.
Some of those guys could have won the scale ship award too.

I thought it was a good show if all the boats got wet!

Congrats on a successful show, all.

Crawfish Festival

We will have another opportunity to run boats in the Portland area on the weekend of August 8th at the Tualitin Crawfish Festival http://www.tualatincrawfish.com/
This is the same facility that we used on the weekend of June the 7th. Hopefully since the local club is a sponsor for this they may have their boats on the pond and not run away when the warhips show up. It is my understanding that Queens Own will be there reperesenting combat warhips and a tug boat club from the Seattle area will be down. I hope that the local group will come out to play so that we can have a good show for the crowds.

2 BIG SHOWS - AUG 16 & 17 '03

If you are in the Mpls-St Paul MN area on the weekend of Aug 16-17 we have 2 big model boat shows scheduled.

On Sat & Sun the 16 & 17th EMYC will be displaying and running boats at the Antique & Classic Boat Show, at Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing MN. Show is 9:00 AM to 5:00PM both days. The models will be displayed and running along with their full size counterparts. Trophys will be awarded for 4 classes of models.

On Sunday we pack up and head back to home port in Edina for the 11th Annual Lighthouse Night. We will display and run model boats from 6:00PM until about 10:30 PM. 2 scale light houses are launched in the lake, we run all lighted boats to the background music supplied by The John Phillips Souza Band. Followed by a Fire Works Display at about 10:00PM.

If you are in the area stop by one or both shows!

See www.emyc.org for further details.
