Holy cow ...

the recommended drive system is supposed to draw 65A. Well, perhaps that was measured with the older MPX BX batteries.

Mine draws 80.84A static @ 11.34V - that's 916.7W input.

By the way: the main decor on the wing adds 14.7g.

My ULTRA is now raedy for maiden and weighs 632g without battery. The stock battery is 293.9g.

Can't wait Jurgen for flight video. And yes never use epoxy on elapor. Just cracks and breaks apart. The Honda Pewter Grey metallic is the perfect color. Looks like a piece of art now. Looks like the power system is great, almost 1kw! Should be moving!!

The maiden almost turned into a desaster and I still don't know why. As it was the maiden flight, somebody from the club offered to hand launch the model. Launching at about half throttle the model flew for about 20 yards, climbed to about 20 ft and started to roll on its back.

It seemed I had no control at this point. The model dropped like flying into thin air. The only time I have experienced something like that, was with a HLG flying on a hot summers day in a football stadium. You had areas where you hit a thermal and the model jumped 20-30ft up, and areas where the model fell like a stone. The FunJet Ultra proofed to be tough: some minor wrinkles on the nose and a sligtly dented left wingtip.

During impact the canopy open, the ESC disconnected itself from the motor and a prop blade broke.

As I did not have any tools or any spare prop with me, I drove home, re-connected the ESC and prepared an APC 6x4" sport prop (reaming the center hole to 8mm). The next launch I did myself and guess what? The model flew like nothing ever happened. Of course you can't expect wonders with a 6x4" on a 2900kV motor and 3s, but with measured 475W static, it is no slouch.

Did two more launches - no problem. I don't use up-elevator trim for launch either. Still puzzled about what happened on the first launch:

When I arrived at the field, it was about 38°C and there was a steady wind. When the model was launched, the wind had completely disappeared. After the impact, the wind was back. Wonder whether this has been a freak turbulence hitting the model during launch (micro-burst, windshear or whatever).

A couple of days ago, we had a news report, where a sun-umbrella was hanging stationary for minutes over a city and the local authorities initially thought it was a joke by model flyers.

Hmmm interesting Jurgen. Yeah i never let other people throw my model for me. The funjet is so easy to launch. I wonder if the person throwing put a spin on the model causing "torque like" pulling. Thats my guess. As long as its thrown like a dart, it will be fine. Looks like to me you need to be the one who launches it.

Well sorry to hear about the mishap. I just did the same thing with my e-flite pogo a few weeks ago. Went str8 up 20 feet and about 80 yards and fell out of the sky like a rock.

Get some video of that bullet!

As I am using all the recommended equipment and Multiplex claims >200kph - which they have demonstrated on several events with telemetry - that's the kind of speed you can expect.

According to DriveCalc, it takes approx. 620W to spin an APC-E 6x5.5" that fast; i.e. the overall efficiency is only 64.5%.

Assuming my FunJet with 550W power-input has an 80% efficient drive (ESC/motor), that would mean 440W power out.

The FJ Ultra is faster - no doubt, but is it more fun? Let's have a look at the "power-to-weight-ratios":

FJ Ultra = 620W/0.926kg = approx. 670W/kg
FJ FFR = 440W/0.575kg = approx. 765W/kg

The "normal FJ" is so much lighter, easier to launch and will clearly outmaneuver the ULTRA at lower speeds.

Time to tinker with drive options ...

You need approx. 700W for 200kph. For 250kph you need approx. 1400W and >280kph have supposedly been achieved with this equipment:

Motor: Dymond Master HQ 3651
Prop: APC-E 7x10"
ESC: Kontronik Jive 60+HV
Battery: 12s Hyperion VX-G3 1800er 35C

That being said, I am not to sure whether my standard FJ isn't more fun.

IMHO the original Funjet looks so much nicer than the Ultra, irrespective of the performance and with it being in white foam it's easier to make a custom colour scheme.
