I've been searching for a motor for a new project and hav eloved my MP 46 sized motor. No stats off the top of my head other than running off 5000mAh 3S pack and using a 15x10 prop. I was considering the Tacon but cannot find too much information on them. Any help for the comparison would be great. I've hear dhte larger MP motors are throwing magnets more but am considering the Tacon 46 to avoid this.

Melnic... are you with Free State Aeromodelers?

yes, I'm with FSA.
I have been flying the Tacon 15 in an Extreme Flight Edge all this past 2 weeks. It's very smooth so when I can, I'll be using Tacon instead of MP.

Great. I've been following another build where MP 160 has been used and a magnet got thrown and he is replacing with a Tacon 110. He seemed to have a big issue getting the bell off the motor to try and re-glue them but no luck.

I'll be at the FSA WWI fly-in this saturday. You guys have a great club and a wonderful field to fly at. I also need to mention the great members you have as well. Bill, Gary, Dave,Cecil, just to name a few.

I have both a MP160 and a Tacon 110. not sure which I'll put in. 160 has the lower KV but but the Tacon I"m expecting to be smoother.
Getting the bell off of ANY motor is not easy. There's a grub screw you have to pull off first. The magnets hold it on too. And a 160 will be HARD TO PULL OFF!. I have a combat 25 motor that I've bent twice. I can get the bell off but I have to hammer the shaft through it to get the shaft off the bell.

Well my MP 60 made it exactly 3 flights at 1k watts before the magnets let go. Bummer. Anyone want a used motor?

Your secret is safe. I know electric is not his strong point but his DVII does fly nice. I'll be the one with the Swedish plane. Doubtful any others will be there.

@ pda: How much you want for it...shipping to MD?

Gary actually has an electric 1/4 scale bipe. D7 I think but it's his brothers. Not sure if he delivered it yet.
I maidened my Nieuport 28 today. Originally, I was thinking I'd prop it for 12S, then later 10S. Last night I test ran the motor with 10S and a 16x8 and only had 1400W. Found I had a 16x10 and then ran 5/6S to make 11S giving me 2 pairs of batteries to fly. The 16x10 went 8600RPM 46A and 2000W. The wattage was estimated cause the WAttmeter was on only 1 pack of the 2 in series. 46A was measured. I will get a wood 18x8 prop for the plane but I was cruising at 1/2 throttle with no problem on the 16x10. The bipe is a a tad over 1/5 scale and I weighed it at 12.4lbs with battery.

My typical motor calc method is to pick and eflite motor close to the Tacon or Monster power and then change the Kv. That usually gets me close. In this case it was showing more current than reality. I was getting the same RPM on the 16x10 prop as adamone but less current. I took an eflite 46 then changed the kv and modified battery resistance. Either the motor/setup is more efficient or maybe the Kv is off on the motor. No bother because every setup is differnt and I've learned I need to have different props to try on something I don't have someone else's data on.

Wonderful. I look forward to seeing it and getting some impressions on the tacon motor. I do the same with adamone. Its great because it over estimates.

Yeah.. sorry for the comments from the peanut gallery videographer. Great flights today. You really got the hang of those landings and I think you will be happier with the 18" prop and some differential on the ailerons... and "Ditch" that gyro. Ok, cheesy but a shot I had to take anyway.

What timing is to be used on these Tacon 46 motors?
High, Med, or Low?

I just installed one in my GP P-51.

My papers from other old motors and esc's say that it should be on high in consideration of the number of magnets.

Tacon bigfoot 32

Just kinda stumbled into this link dealing with Tacon motors. I have two questions for the link's guru's... I'm a long time Nitro flyer fairly new to electric. The Tacon 32 I ordered is 770kv, so is that more power at a lower rpm?

I'm thinking of putting it in the Eflight Rapsody 25, but actually cannot find a Pitts style biplane that could take the 32. I like the looks of a Waco, just cannot find one. There was a guy selling a Pitts Python, but it looks like the business went south.

My inclination is to go with a 4 cell battery, and I want to be on the top end of power, instead of below or medium. I think I can get there with a 12 inch prop but will listen for all those 40 size guru's to chime in.

Almost all the monster power/bigfoot motors are 14 poles/magnets.

I typically run MED or HIGH timing.

Tacon 32 is right on the edge of being able to use 4S or 5S.
But most would run 4S.
A basic calculation of 700W / 14.8 gives you 47A so you'd want to use a 60A ESC with it.

I ran some #'s assuming a Gens Ace 3300mAh 25C 4S pack I have (IR of .006) and a 13x8 prop and it comes out at about 52A and 700W @ 8200RPMs
That's at 3.7V per cell but with a fresh pack it would be higher than that.
Electric motors drop the current about 10% lower in the air.
A 12x10 would be close to the same.

KV is a measurement of the RPM per volt applied to the motor without a load.
Once properly loaded, the rpm drops to 80% of unloaded (about).

Thanks for those numbers... I also ran across a Ultimate bipe from Precisionaerobatics.com

They use a Thrust 40 motor so I need to compare specs.

The Tacon 32 is 210g so you will start with 7% more wieght than needed.

That plane sounds more like it wants a Tacon 25. Which is a tad heavier than the thrust but rated for 10% more Wattage.
I have one of those in an Extreme Flight 48" edge.
4S 2200mAh 25C Gens Ace, 12x6 prop. and about 575W static

Oh, one other thing is the length.
The Tacon 32 is 50mm, the Tacon 25 is 48mm and the Thrust 40 is 41mm long.
If they designed it to fit the Thrust 40 directly to the firewall, the prop will stick out further.
I ran into that with my Extreme flight. I had to dremmel out the cowl and did not use the plastic spinner I ordered and went with just the electric prop adaptor. It worked, but did not have the spinner on the front.
