I finally got to fly my FunCub yesterday. I'm very pleased with it!

My set-up:

-E-Flite Power 10 motor
-Castle Creations Thunderbird 36 ESC
-Dimension Engineering SportBEC BEC (set at 5V output)
-Futaba 7ch FAAST Rx, 7C Tx
-Zippy 3s 2200mah 40C and Lightmax 3s 2100mah 40C batteries
-Master Airscrew 11x5 e-prop
-Hi-Tec HS-81 rudder and elevator servos
-Hi-Tec HS-65 aileron servos
-Turnigy TGY-90S flap servos

I had intended to use an APC 11x5.5E prop, but didn't have one handy. The MA 11x5 worked very well. I have a couple of 11x5.5Es on the way.

I was flying mixed-throttle flights with my timer at 8 minutes. On one flight, I decided to push a little further and hit the low voltage cut-off very soon afterward. I moved my timer back to 7 minutes. The flight batteries were just warm after flights. I never remembered to feel the ESC or motor to see how they were. I was having too much fun!

It was a windy day (wind sock out straight at times) but the FunCub had no trouble. With half flaps, I could get airborne in approximate one foot. Without the headwind, I figure it may roll as far as two feet before getting off the ground.... I didn't try any full flap take-offs.

One thing I noticed on the first circuit around the field is that the FunCub maintained the bank angle I put it at. It didn't seem to self-correct like a typical high-wing model. It liked healthy rudder inputs for turns. It felt solid and stable and I was impressed with the way it flew. Maybe it's because it's made of foam, or because of the cartoonish looks of the over-size wheels, but I guess I was expecting it to fly like a trainer. I was happy to find it flies like a Cub!

I had programmed 20% down elevator to full flaps in the Tx and the half flap flight was perfect: no pitch change. It was not enough for full flaps though, and the FunCub still would pitch up a bit with the flaps all the way down.

As far as CG, I didn't actually measure it. I knew I was well forward of the manual's recommendation and flew with the rear of the flight battery even with the forward edge of the cooling hole in the bottom of the fuse. This seemed to be just right for normal flying, but the FunCub required a considerable amount of down elevator for inverted flight.

I used the manual's recommended settings for the motor mount thrust angles and the model maintained a steady pitch during abrupt throttle changes. I used one of Sotog's CNC aluminum motor mounts and was surprised when guys in the club who had never seen a FunCub commented on the nice motor mount.

I had loads of fun with the plane and will surely fly it a lot.

I hope everyone has good luck and lots of enjoyment from their FunCubs!

Good flying,

Make sure that you have the newer Airboss ESC with SBEC, otherwise you need a seperate BEC to power those servos.

Thank you for your reply - I ran this combo in a EF 48" Extra so it's a proven combo for me and yes it is the new ESC with a 6 volt switching BSC. My concern was that the motor might be too big/heavy but if you guys think it's not then I'll give it a try. I'll start off with a 12 x 6 and go from there. I've read so many good things about this plane - I think it will be a good aileron trainer for my daughter but also very fun for me as well.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi,

Alu mount plate arrived last week. Solved my vibration Probs a bit. It even worked with the original motor mount as well, but as using only 2 instead of 4 screws had vibration if motor shaft was bend a bit or a screw was not fit perfekt.

With 4 screws it ist better.
Even the Air Flow and cooling is better. Motor comes down quit cool now.
As you can see in the photo air could flow now on the outside of the motor as well the alu mount himself could take a bit of the heat

The Photos in the Water was taken in the Garden Pond yesterday. First Time with Floats. Looking forward to fly with them.
On water it works without water ruder. Was steerable with ruder only...

Had over 60 Flys now with FC.
Turnigy 35-42 1250 Kv @ 11x5.5 prob. Tried a 10 x 5 Prop Yesterday. Less Thrust, a bit slower, but didn´t save a lot of energy. Was wondering about that.

Normaly could fly between 10 and 15 minutes, but also could emty a 2200maH Battery in less than 5 minutes.

I love the FC, but i have a big Problem.
What Plane i will buy next? What Plane make me half as happy as the Funcub doo?
Think next Plane will be a Fun Cub again

Testet 1300 mah Batterys as well. Could feel the difference between wight.

I think it could be interested to have a lightwight Fun Cub als well as a overpowered Fun Cub.

What are the other Planes for ???

Flight Video. Sorry for poor video quality (and flight skill)

next time i have to hire jürgen, he makes better videos (mayby Pilots are better )

Multiplex Fun Cub slow and low, vertical (10 min 49 sec)

Vids are taken by Keycam and digital Photo, so no zoom change is possible while taking video.

I love the slow flying with the flaps down, I thought you were underpowered at first until later in the video you were moving quite fast.

I can't wait to do the same.

Can you share your setup please?

Thanks.

I don't know is the simple answer. I plan on using whatever prop combination that will consume around 30A WOT. I am a WOT sort of guy and I have burned up enough ESC's and motors to learn to stay within the specs of the motor. I will let you know when I post my final configuration here.
