Just made it home.

Last I heard it was 42, but it got stronger after that.

Creg, Craig and I had some great flight's at the end of the day.

The Rodent was in it's element!

The flat light made it difficult to see at times.

Good times!

Till next year!

Todd

Hey there Tri-Cities fliers,
Just went through this thread enjoying the Great picts.
I remember visiting sometime in the late 90's to photog the first annual slope speed contest (pre-DS) but I don't remember which butte is which.
I arrived late saturday at one location with only a guy in a trailer onsite. We chatted a bit, I strolled around & took a few picts. There were these tiny birds flitting around like they were on meth or something.
On Sunday, early afternoon, I rode up a dirt track to where a few fliers congregated and watched some flying-the air really wasn't there that day.
When I left,I rode through the site onto this long gravel road till it hit pavement.I recognized the pict from post 699 right away.
Can anyone set me straight on which hill was which?
Thanks
Jay

Jay, are you talking about the "World Speed Record" event that Will Byers put on in 2000? I think that we flew at the north facing hill call Kionia Butte. Photos in 699 looks like Eagle Butte.

Jay, Thomas, et al., the speed trials must've been in '99, because I was demo-ing my Solitair Plus, the first demo plane I had for ShredAir, which started in '99.
The trials were at Kiona Butte in slermal lift.
The road in the photo likely is Webber Canyon Road or McBee on the south side of Kiona.

No I don't think it ever got that high but towards the end of the day it was really ripping probably around the high 40's. After maidening the Extreme Saturday I toned down the elevator and added some expo for some good flights on Sunday. On my last flight of the day I asked Derrick if he thought he could launch the Extreme for me and he said "sure no problem" but I swear I heard him halfway out to the lip saying " HOLY #$%%&^"!!! After ripping it around for a few laps I brought her in and felt good about bringing her home in one piece. I'm pretty sure that's the first time I ever maidened a plane fully ballasted. It was really good to see everyone this weekend, I had a blast, maybe one more????

The speed trials were in June 1999.

IIRC Paul Naton had the fastest one way pass with a tweaked Raider and Espen Torp came out on top.

Tom,Thomas,Dieter, and TD thanks for your input.
Kiona sounds like the spot.
I really tripped out seeing the Hanford facility cooling towers through the haze.
Still can't place the year though.Pretty sure it was pre Y2K.
The ride up the face was a bit unsettling for me,it was the first ride in gravel on the ST1100 (700#,higher CG than I was accustomed to).Someone pointed out the road on the backside so I took that route.A Great trip down 395 on the way home.
So what's the site across the valley from Kiona?
Definitely one of those landmark "Must Fly" zones.
Thanks for the help
Skies.
Jay.

mixed bag

Those pictures in post 699 are a mixed bag in that there are some of EB and some of SDR looking south. The one with Sam and Thomas sure looks like EB. My memory is not so good since my two heart attacks, so I could be wrong.

to the right/ center it is called Red Mountain and the huge one on the left is called Rattle Snake Mountain (Millitary restricted area, otherwise this 15 mile long ridge would be world class slope haven) .
