Here's what's been keeping me back from getting much done on my Sunracer...

Let me tell you, metallics are difficult to work with! The neon red is no picknic either. Many light coats of each (like twenty?). One coat of clear.

Not really. For a pylon racer its kV is too low and its too heavy. You could make it work, but its far from ideal.

Something like a small 6S (like a 1000mah 50C) pack with a 5-6" prop would work. But it'd be heavy and not particularly efficient as the motor isnt "in the zone" and finding batteries that can support the amp draw, and still fit in the rifle would be tricky.

You could set it up as mini hotliner, turning a 8x7+5degree aeronaut folder on 3S which would work, but not as a pylon racer. And dont expect much gliding as the wingloading will be quite high

Thanks jackosmeister!

Say jackosmeister, I'm already running a 16/15/2 in one of my Rifles from last summer, but if I can't get another one soon for my new Rifle (got one on order from MEGA Cz, but don't know when I'll get it), what do you think would be a comparable motor? What about a Neu 1105/2.5Y @ 3900kV? The MEGA is 4180kV, so the Neu is slightly lower.

I tried a Neu 1105/2Y last summer, but on run up on the bench it pulled 58A, 615W, 34,000rpm so I flew it a few times on 2S, then sold the motor. At the time I thought that was way too much, but my MEGA pulls 60A, 610W, 38,000rpm and I've flown that setup many times. Do you think the 2Y can take it, or would I be better off with the 2.5Y?

Or, what other motor out there will turn a 4.1 x 4.1 around 39,000rpm and withstand the heat?

Do tell.

I don't know if I want to wait two weeks, three weeks, four weeks...for my MEGA.

Thanks!

Tim

3s and a 7x9 (likely would have to trim it to something like 6.7x9) would be an interesting solution for that motor. It'd be like a 4-stroke compared to the high RPM/small prop solutions

Tim,

I have a 15/2 i can sell. Its in good shape.. lmk

BTW your far better off running a 4.75x5.5 at a lower rpm then the 4.1 at those rpm.

I dont know much about Neu's sorry man, I hear and read good things but have never played with em.

In terms of the fastest speed 400 pylon setup, bearing in mind what will fit...

Im liking the idea of a Mega 16 EDF (15 grams heavier than a 16/15 with a kV of 3370) on 4S, it'd likely make some awesome numbers.

I had a medusa 28-32-4200 that did exactly that on 3s. They're out of business now but can still be found out there. They weigh about 70g. That was on a pack that got pulled down to almost 10v also, so a new quality pack would probably break 40k rpm.

Thanks Dave. I'll PM you about the motor.

You can't put a 4.75 x 5.5 on that 15/2 though. You'd need a motor with a much lower kV, or go 2S, right?

You're recommending the larger prop at lower rpm than the smaller prop at higher rpm because you get more thrust from the larger prop, right?

I gotta say though, I have no problems with the 4.1 x 4.1 at 39,000 during any aspect of the flight. Launches are no problem at all.

I think that's the "sweat spot," 4,000-ish kV on a quality can that can take the heat.

Thanks for the tip.

I don't think I want to stuff 4S in there. Worth thinking about, but not inclined to do so at this moment.

That purpose built mega combined with 4s, say 1600 45c, could be a more efficient way to spin that 4.1" to near 40k. With two shallow 1600 2s, end to end, one could get optimal cooling from front to rear. Im thinking the my Ice 50 would work nicely with in-air currents under 50a.

This could be a light, efficient option to 160+. Has me thinkin'..
