Keep the FreeBird away from your new toy, or the Rifle will catch something nasty. 8)

I just purchased the Rifle and this is my first go fast small plane like this. I purchased the HS 45 and have some of the HS 65s.
The HS 65 is working for the Elev. and the HS 45 for the wings
Had to lift the 45's, too deep of a servo. Had to shim the HS 65 due to the size of servos and shape of fuse.
I am using the Himax 20xx 4200 motor, but the shaft is 2mm rather than the 4mm for the spinner. Hard to find something to fit the 2mm shaft of the motor in a collar that fits spinner, but in initial run up with 30 amp control, hyperion 1800 35c and the 4.75x4.75, wow! the heat is high on static test. Ran a little over 30 amps and from what i could tell....short burst around 400watts...or more. I may go to the smaller prop with less amps. 4.1x4.1
I am at high altitude also....5100 ft. What is everyone else finding.
I don't like the heat.....real hot! even with no spinner and added air flow.

@keehopper - that motor is bad for direct drive; you will demag it pretty quickly (speaking from experience). Pick another motor around 3000Kv.

DRziplock,
Thanks, why don't they tell you this? nothing mentions the warning or fact that it is not good for this type of application or needs gearing ...says up to 40k rpm! have you had problems with this motor running on its own without gearing?
thanks

The kv is too high. Not enough airflow and you would be pushing that motor with 4.1x4.1 prop.

I'm running a 3750kv motor on a 4.1x4.1. In a pylon I probably won't prop up from there. If I had more airflow I might be able to get a 4.5 prop on it.

keehopper... that 2mm shaft is VERY easy to break. I think I ran it on 2s in a hummer.

@keehopper - I think the Maxxprod site is pretty clear about the 4200's application constraints, and the second page of the manual that comes with the motor (and is linked on their website) contains a graph that shows very clearly that you hit the motor's maximum current (20A) with a 4.5x3 prop at less than 8.5V.

Maxx are considerably better than many other motor vendors in this regard, in that their data tends to be reasonably accurate and their claims modest and consistent.

I have used several of the 2025/4200s in EDF applications. They work well as long as you don't overheat them, which you will surely do with the setup you proposed. As others have noted, the 2mm output shaft is also not well suited to direct drive use.

From my experience flying a Sokhol pylon racer on Medusa motors, I found that a 3500 kv motor with a 4.1 x 4.1 prop gives great speed and a 2800 kv motor with a 4.7 x 4.7 prop gives very good speed with a much easier launch because of the increased static thrust from the larger prop. Both setups were flown with 3S 1500 lipos and a Phoenix 25 amp speed control. My favorite of the two motors was actually the 2800 kv because I liked being able to casually throw the plane and know it would climb out without having to accelerate first.

Thanks guys! I am taking the motor back and getting the one they mention goes with the rifle. Most of the plane is together except the motor and it looks pretty cool!
I have never had a pylon plane. Mostly casual planes. I have a new 25 pulse that I love flying on strong 4s with a 12x10...lot of fun going faaaaaaaaaassssssssssssst!

Perhaps the name "Rifle" refers to the roll rate instead of top speed!
