I am charging up a 3s 4500 pack to try it with to see if it is the battery or the motor/esc.

edit - pulling less than 12 amps. Now I need to figure out why. I am checking the esc settings.

I don't get it. I disabled current limiting. The 4500 mah pack is at 12v under load but it never even pulls 12 amps.

Static, with the 24-33-3180 and 4.75 x 4.75 you should be pulling about 28A.
In the air you'll be pulling right at 20A.

The esc might be programmed for 4s and goes to throttle reduction on 3s

It is a castle Ph 25. I have it set on soft cutoff - at less than 10v. It has been flown many times in a 25 amp setup. I bet it is something simple and obvious but right now I don't see it.

Well, I have completed the assembly of the new Rifle. I was a little disapointed in the stiffness of elevator control with the supplied "black" push rod. I also noticed that there is some slop in the elevator that looks like the guide tube has popped loose somewhere. I guess I'll rip it apart and replace with something different.

I went with servos from HC and they are a little too big, the aileron servo needed to be mounted much higher out of the wing than stock location. Thus I'm running into issues getting the balance point right as the battery runs into the servo before getting it aft far enough.

ARC 28-37-2 (shaft shortened by 6mm)
Turnigy Plush 40A ESC
Turnigy nano-tech 1600mah 3S 25~50C Lipo
D933MG Digital Metal Gear Servo
AR6110e receiver

Would a cable work on the elevator rather than the rod?

I'm working on servo placement in the tail using a thin wing servo but its gonna bulge the airfoil a bit .

Steve I am surprised to hear that you have the battery that far aft. I have mine as far forward as I can push it in the nose to balance the plane. Your motor must be much heavier then the Ammo.

Yes, the ARC is heavier than the Ammo but I don't know by how much as I did not weigh it.

A tail mounted servo would work out well for me as far as balance goes, so I may look into that as well.

I tried to run my Ammo on a 2nd Castle Ph 25 amp esc tonight and got the same 11 amps at WOT and 12v. I guess I will have to call Tower and assume it is a motor issue. I hope I am not overlooking something simple but I cannot imagine what.

It does sound like a motor problem. Maybe it was a mismarked lower kv motor? They do make a 2500 kv version of that motor. Maybe it got in the wrong bin when they were making them?

One thing is for sure. Tower Hobbies will work with you... Just call up their support line, explain the problem. You might have to pay shipping to send it in but they are really good about replacing their products.

Still waiting for Rifles to come into stock... I almost back ordered it till I found out that the free shipping offer didn't apply to back orders... Dough! I'll be experimenting with a 24-33-3500 Ammo that I've had for about 3 years now... Still working great so I hope it can make it work here... Right now I have it in a custom blue foam "Mini Stryker" with a 4.7x4.2 prop. Get's to 92 mph on that plane... Motor only gets warm but it does get lots of cooling air...

I think that motor would be happier with 4.1x4.1 and the rifle would be faster.. Expect 20-30mph over that foamy. I ran my 3180 on 1000mah 4s in bursts with the 4.1. 130 mph level! If you can get that prop up around 30k rpm, you will see 110-120 easy!

Ok, I'll do some experiments... I have 3 props to try when I get the plane in...
(4.1x4.1, 4.5x4.1, and 4.7x4.2). The only thing I worry about on the 4.1x4.1 is having enough thrust on launch to get it on step...

Dont launch full throttle

Prop will be totally stalled otherwise, meaning itll take longer until it actually bites.

4" is plenty, ya just gotta know how to use it
