Best 1st eds I've tried: http://www.snhobbies.com/product_inf...roducts_id=380 read: not the best 1st plane ever.
For $$ I'd get this F15 and run in on 4s, it'll also need 50amp esc.

get a Multiplex Twister and run it with a 60amp Turnigy plush with this fan and motor combo, and buy an extra motor like this when or if it blows up and get you some 4s 2650 or 3000 batteries with your order. you crash the twister and it's pretty repairable, hand launch, and land almost anywhere, no wheels to tear off.
probably about $350 without the transmitter and reciever though, with HS82mgs
get this motor, really good stuff
and a couple of these

L-39, low wing, VERY STABLE
I have a great first EDF for you-I have it all setup converted to a larger 70 mm fan, 4s 2200 pack and 60 amp ESC. It will also come with an ar6100 reciever, I am asking 225, but will accept any fair offer-this jet is in fair condition and is a blast to fly-WILL give you 6 minute flights! cruises at about 1/2 throttle, almost no EDF's do that yet! here is a link!
Tell me what you think!
BTW, the EDF is a Schulman Aviation aluminum EDF and the ESC is a Jetmate 60/78 burst from ductedfans.com-Morris over there is a great guy, and has lots of good info! The Fan and ESC are worth the 225 alone!
