If you were pulling 25a on a 2812 rewind, maybe I should grab a 30a esc instead of 25a

That is a lot of power if it is for a Scythe. It will be fun to fly but you may have torque roll the opposite direction of the prop rotation. Once you are up and flying you should be OK but the plane will roll faster one way than the other.

Do a ground test on the motor and let it run for a couple of minutes and see how hot the ESC gets. I usually like an ESC rated 1.5X the peak amps of the motor.

I would definitely run a 30 amp on the rewind. I pull a static 34 amps with a full battery, although It doesn't get super hot when flying. I don't get any torque problems when flying mine, it's very stable and rolls fairly evenly. It's a blast.

Yeah I was running the rewound 2812 with a 7x6 prop on the Scythe and it ran good. Right now I'm using the emax 2805 2840 kv motor with a 4.75x4.75 prop and it's been working good for me. It's a lot quieter and doesn't have that roll. I use the rewound 2812's on the widomakers and it's a joy with them.

Here is the setup I have so far for the light build.

Motor HK Ap05 3000kv: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...C-6DEBF4A5DEEB

ESC Turnigy plush 6a: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...2-1D7357467380

Batts nano tech 2s 300mah: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...F-690DE55C2527

Servo HXT 500 5g: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...6-9B8C5EB2C8D6

RX Orange 6ch rx with cover removed: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11965

Props 5030: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...F-DD228000C166

Connectors 0.8mm: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...7-7F2B4BDF5E1B

Heat Shrink for 0.8mm connectors: http://www.hobbyking.com/buddy.asp?c...F-093D243DD9AB

Wing and Elevons 36.8g
rx 3.7
motor 5.4
servos 10g for both
esc 6g
prop 3g ish
batt 17g

Total for these is 86g or 2.91 oz. The supposed motor and prop combo is about 3.9g of thrust. I'm sure there will be a little bit of weight for the connectors and stuff but I think I can build this fairly light. Plus I will loose a little bit of weight taking out the foam for the electronics. I'll let you know how the light build goes and what it weighs when complete.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of the servo horns, control cables and a rough estimate to tape the elevons on?

Eric

Eric, don't forget weight of glue and tape and laminate for strength. I tried the light build on page 36, post #534, but didn't get the CG without using a much larger battery than I planned for. I ended up at 5.5 oz with similar components, but it flies great at slow speeds and is very durable even with minimal laminate. And the bonus of the 800mah 2s battery instead of the intended 350mah is 20+ min flights with moderate throttle required at the small park I fly in.

I couldn't resist posting a photo of my Scythe build in progress.

It's build heavy to take the extra weight and power of a rewound 2812 and 1300 3s battery - I'm building it with hopes that it will be faster than my Grim Reaper on 4s

I added additional Extreme tape and extra spars in the wing tips; so far it weighs
3.8 oz.

Thanks for another great wing Lee - when completed I'll have 4 of your designs....darn things are as addicting as 3D profile planes!

I built an assassain and I used hot glue and made a little hole right where the cg was. Then I used a little eyehook and hung it from the ceiling. I made a rough layout of where the esc, rx, and batt would go and I would have it balance on the wing. Then I cut all my holes for everything except the battery and I redid the cg with just the battery left then I cut the battery hole and that worked really well.

I think it was the Reaper forum where we talked about the hanging method resulting in a different CG than the holding-up-from-the-bottom method.

It may well be that on a wing as small as the Scythe, the difference is very small to even nothing, but do be aware that at least on the bigger ones, like the Reaper, if you balance it at 10.5" by hanging, it won't be balanced at 10.5" by holding it from the bottom. (and CTH has pretty much said go with holding from the bottom, if you're seeing a difference.)

@E1Allen, without an Assassin easily at my disposal, I'm wondering if you'd mind double checking your suspended CG, then also holding it up from the bottom at the exact same spot to see if it's balanced or not.

I would love to. A year ago I attached my phone to it to see how fast it would go. It flew away, never to be seen again in the woods somewhere along with my phone. And yes it flew away perfectly level and I just taped the phone on top.

Now that's a creative way to justify getting the new phone you wanted
