Futaba 9Z lithium battery change?

I know that this is the wrong section. I posted in the radio section but I don't think that anybody reads that.

Has anyone changed their own lithium batteries in the 9Z radio?
Futaba recommends changing them every five years and it will cost about $60.00 plus the time that it is in the shop to get it done.

I just wondered how hard it could be. If Futaba was going to build a radio that required battery changes you would think that they would make them easy to get to, like a flashlight battery or something.

Thanks,

Tim

I read somewhere it's pretty difficult to do, although I have not tried it myself.

Even disassembling the 9Z case is a nightmare. Each switch comes off as separate pieces like a jigsaw puzzle.

I think $60 is a small amount to pay considering the radio costs $800.

But I have yet to replace mine, going onto 8th year.

Thanks Steph,

Guess that I will send it in. You area going on eight years so I probably have time left. I was just afraid that I would lose all of my setups and have to start over again.

Tim,

Buy one of the memory modules and just save a copy of your models there.

I sent mine in after 7-8 years of use and they replaced it....there were also a few other things done to it.....youd be surprised what wears out w/ a lot of use. Probably should send it in the next year or two to have everything checked out.

Sounds like the way to go Scott. It has taken so long to tweak each of the heli's to fly right that I didn't want to all of the sudden have to start again.

You would think that when they designed this radio knowing that the lithium battery was going to need replacing every five years, they would have just put it under an easy access panel or something. But like you said, I am sure that there are some other things that need looking at.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread. I need info.

I want to open the 9Z myself.

I understand the Jigsaw like assembly. What areas do I need to watch out.

Any input would do.

Thanks.

I did this once, not worth repeating. Soldering in the new battery is no biggie, but getting that case together is a screamin' ........

If memory serves, the really difficult part was the corner pieces and the back plate. Those items key together and add rigidity to the whole assembly.

Buy a CamPac, copy your models to it and send the radio in....

I'm still flying Fred's 9Z WCII, now outfitted with an 8ch FASST module (as well as several 72Mhz modules).

Sorry Fred, I just googled it & this thread showed up on the 9Z. I had to try.

ChrisS, I took out the back part & you said it, I tried to clean the LCD, it took me 2 hours to put just the LCD back in place.

Jeffery, I plan to do that too.

My ribbon for buttons A to D don't work. Will have to look for one.

Hope this thread gets relocated.
