HexRod HD Hexapod Robot "CrustCrawler"
This is the HexRod HD Hexapod Robot from CrustCrawler. The HexRod HD is a six legged heavy duty walking robot that is made from CNC machined .063 gauge 5052 aluminum. Twelve Hitec HS-322 HD servos operate the two degrees of freedom for the legs vertical lift and horizontal rotation. Two additional Hitec HS-322 HD servos operate the S3 tilt/pan system (the head). It can is fully programmable for autonomous operation.

Now for too much information
-- The Parallax USB Board of Education (BoE) programming board is the command center for the HexRod HD. The BASIC Stamp microcontroller module is plugged directly into this project board with various I/O connections available to interface with all the electronics used on the robot. The BoE is also the bridge between HexRod HD and your computer.
-- The Parallax BS2 STAMP microcontroller is the brains behind the brawn. It is a chip the size of a stamp that can processes about 4,000 instructions per second, has a EEPROM memory of around 500 lines of instruction, knows 36 different programming commands (PBASIC), has an internal clock, and is a 16 pin I/O controller
-- The Parallax Servo Controller is the central nervous system on the HexRod HD. It is able to simultaneously drive up to 16 servos, and can be networked to run up to 32 servos using two PSC’s. It is possible to discretely program each servo’s speed (.75 to 60 seconds) and range (up to 180º) for every motion with 16-bit resolution and position reporting.
-- The Parallax LCD AppMod is an interface between the BoE and the user when away from a connected computer. A two-line, eight-character display is able to scroll messages, display custom characters, animation sequences, and blinking cursors. There are four user buttons that are programmable to accept inputs.
-- S3 tilt/pan system with a Parallax PING)))Ultrasonic Sensor is the eyes of the HexRod HD Hexapod Robot. It is a range finder precisely measuring distances with 180º of rotation both vertically and horizontally from as little as an inch up to 10 feet away. With the BS2 programming, the HexCrawler is able to make decisions based on the information in it’s environment and navigate in the direction of the most unobstructed route. The scan takes less that a few seconds to complete and can be repeated at regular intervals. If an object comes within a specified distance, action will be taken to avoid the obstacle by adjusting the hexapod’s stride to the left or right, coming to a stop and spinning left or right, or by backing up then continuing on its way in a different direction. Very cool.
-- Everything about this robot is in perfect working condition. There is however a mark on the LCD AppMod display that I pictuRed for you to see. The display works perfectly otherwise. Included is a USB cable, 9-pin Serial cable, and 12V power supply. Not included is a 7.2V, 3300mAh NiMH battery that I used in this project.
