Question
Need some advise on flying edf jets

Hello all, i just purchased my first edf jet, the Sapac foam T45 from Chuck's Hobbies. I'm an expirienced flyer, just not with jets, but before the maiden flight i would like to have a little more knowledge on flying fast models like:
-how close to keep the jet to you in the air
-what type of flying patterns (circles, ovals, figure 8's)etc...
-speed
-take offs and landings
-flight time
-how high to fly
-what not to due

Im really open to anything and love to learn new things about edf jets

1) keep her as close as your other parkflyers...till you get comfortable
2) ovals till you get the hang of her
3) fast enough to keep her in the air...EDF's are normally slower to get going but take longer to slow down compared to props
4) slowly go to WOT and let her lift off on her own, landings keep 1/8 throttle till your within 6 feet of the ground then you can stop the fan...it will act like a brake.
5) 4 minutes
6) see answer to #1
7) NO HARD BANKING TURNS till you get used to the fans sound...to sharp a bank can stall the fans

wow thanks for all the info this will really help when it comes time to fly my jet. now when i take off ill start at full throtle till it gets up to speed then slowly lift off the ground then should i imediatly cut the throtle down or what should i do?

no, slowly accelerate to WOT and let her lift off on her own...hold a 45* climb out till you get to altititude, level her and then slowly roll back to 3/4... if you roll back the throttle before your completely on step you can stall. Then fly a few ovals and you can roll the throttle back a little more to get the feel for whats stall speed is.

oh, landings.... slowly roll back to 1/2 stick and make a few ovals around the field ensuring you bleed off the speed...then on the back stretch you can roll to a few clicks above stall speed and GENTELY make your turns in to final and then roll back to 1/8 stick (or waht even gives you the glide slope...every plane is different).

now say i do crash but its not major, like a bump or two no physical damage, how do i know i can still fly it should i look for certain things?

It's a judgement call. If the wings and tail surfaces are intact and can take a load, and all flight control surfaces are intact and functioning properly, and nothing looks visibly warped or out of place and the motor runs smoothly, then she should be alright.

J3tman,

I would agree with ATIS's answers to your questions. I would also add: use low rates, especially on the ailerons to begin with. Go to high rates after you have more confidence in the plane.

I would definitely keep your first flight to 4 minutes. 60% throttle should get you around an oval pattern pretty well. I might get about 6 minutes of time with mild flying like this. I am down to maybe 4-5 minutes as I have become more aggressive with the throttle. Four minutes is a safe place to start.

Best time to fly would be when there is little to no wind. Morning typically is good. This plane handles the wind well, but stronger winds would add a new dynamic that you don't want on your first flights.

I think that the SAPAC T-45 is a great choice as a first EDF. It has very friendly flight characteristics. It flies slow very well. It lands well. It is very visible in the air, so you can get a good idea of your plane's orientation.

The stock configuration is fast enough to have fun with as a first EDF. I think that the airframe would make a great platform for performance improvements over time. At least that's my plan.
