Got My Plane

The big brown truck delivered my Falcon 120 this afternoon. I have checked the plane and the glue joints look good except one fuse former which is not glued well. As others have suggested, I will reglue all of the joints I can get to. Of note is that the model comes with steel pinned hinges (Klett clones i guess). Fuse feels fairly heavy (glass seems quite thick). It weighs 2 lbs 5 oz. Seems quite heavy in the tail/engine mount area. Plan to install the carbon rods in the aft section. Look forward to installing my converted dynamax.

Thanks to Scatsob for the heads up and the promotion code for 10% off.

Now the important stuff. I respectfully request to be admitted to the Falcon 120 club . All in favor please say yes, all opposed please say yes.

Thanks in advance for admiting me to the club .

Ed

Fair enough. It looks like the plane is going to weigh north of 15 lbs. Is that about right? I have found some functional struts from my dearly departed Jet Model Products F-4 (2 OS 91's and Dynamax fans and it weighed 33 lbs) and the appropriate set of main retracts. I am thinking of putting a 10-12 lb nose gear in it (why, because I have it on hand).

I have converted two Dynamax fans. One has the Turnigy 880 KV outrunner motor (thanks for the thread Lee) and the second has a Leopard 700 KV inrunner (39mm) motor that I am trying. The Turnigy (on my test stand similar to Ron101's unit and using Eagle Tree data acquisition system) put out about 5080 watts @ 147 amps on some Turnigy 5S 5000 mah 30 c packs (10S so 2S2P) using the Turnigy Dlux 160amps ESC. Efflux without intake ring (Roger hope to have yours in hand shortly) and no tail pipe was 187 mph and thrust was 11 lbs. If what I have read is true, then I should see an increase in thrust with the intake ring. The inrunner was on the same setup and put out 3200 watts at 92 amps. When I get some more packs I will run it on 11 and 12S.

More to come later,
Ed

Working away on mine, control surfaces are hinged, I went with the CA hinges but sealed them with clear oracote to add extra strength and they are solid, I used some larger CA hinges in the elevator to be safe and It is getting sealed as well. I went with the 645mg's on the ailerons and flaps, I tore open one of the flap servos and reversed it internally to safe a channel. Rudders are hinged as well but man they do not line up that great... I am using 225mg's on the rudders (in the elevator spots) one will be reversed internally like the flaps to save a channel. I am going single elevator servo with a 170oz digital in the bottom side of the vertical stab. Pilot is on his way and I am going to start the cockpit and canopy frame this weekend. My retracts and power system are in my amd hawk but they will get pulled after a few flights to go in the falcon.

My Falcon with a 100mm Turbax/Haoye hybrid with a Turnigy 4030 880kV motor running on 12S 5000 was just shy of 15lbs. That's a pretty lightweight power package, so expect 15lbs to be about minimum.

Turnigy Dlux hv160 test

I posted this in the hobbyking 160 hv thread but it may be of interest here with the cc problems.

I've got about 25 flights on my Falcon 120 with cc hv160 on 10s but it hasn't been back to cc yet so I did not try 12s. Just got a Dlux 160 and ran my 125mm fan on 12s, 44volts, 144 amps, 6300 watts for 20 seconds and it looks good. I added 4 low esc caps to the input leads as the standard caps look light to me. All temps were just warm. The scale is hard to read but was flirting with 20 lbs.
