I forgot to give additional info.

I had to add about .75 oz of lead to the nose. I put it in the battery cut out into the foam in front of the battery.

It showed signs of the tail being heavy on the original test flight. Abnormally unstable, slugish to respond. It use to loop tight like it was attached to rails. AFter lights, it flopped to one side like a lazy floppy snap roll.

After nose weight, it was right back to normal, super responsive, very controlable.! Worth it because the lights look great.

To all of those who are using balsa elevons, where do you get your balsa elevon stock? Or do you just shape your own balsa? I gotta trim my elevons to accommodate the larger prop I'll be running, and I'm thinking about just switching out to balsa since I'm not flying combat or anything. The EPP elevons are fine, but I personally just have an easier time gluing rock solid control horns in balsa.

I was looking at 3/8 x 2 1/2 x 36 aileron stock from this site. Any thoughts or opinions? Thanks!

Can someone recommend me a Cobra motor for my setup?

Deep Reaper XL (planning on using the 6" extension)
6000-10000 total mah from 2x 3s batteries in parallel
Go Pro HD + CCD 480 camera
1.2Ghz FPV gear including all the goodies (ET OSD, Dragon Link)
Hitec HS-82 servos

I was looking at this one:

Cobra 2808/8 1450kv with a 9x6e prop @ 62oz thrust

fnffishcore,

I've used www.balsausa.com with great success. They ship fast and affordably too.

McCleary.11,

That setup could work. I'd either get a slightly higher KV motor of the same class, or put a 10x6 prop on it. Several of our group with the Hercules are using 1600 and 1800kv motors on 3S.

I'm flying 4S on 1200kv and it's great on a 10x6 prop. A Deep Reaper with the extension will have more authority with a 10x6 prop, whether you fly 4S or 3s.

So i bought the 2217/12 cobra motor that Rocky recommended in an earlier post. I found that this motor is SMALL and has a 3 mm shaft. I have yet to fly it, but I am assuming he recommended this motor because it would be very efficient for FPV long range flights.....Right?

jbmccoy205,

It is a pretty small motor. I guess it depends on which of the Reaper plane's you're putting it on. It may work nicely on a regular non-fpv Grim Reaper. But on a heavily loaded FPV plane like a Deep Reaper or Reaper XL, seems like you'd be underpowered. I haven't used the cobra line of motors yet, so I could be wrong.

What kind of plane are you putting it on, and is it FPV?

I never use motors with 3mm shafts because they snap & bend so easy, even sometimes just when landing, since these planes belly land. A combat plane needs 4mm. FPV planes also need bigger shafts, because if you bend a shaft even slightly, the vibration will render your video useless.

Standard Grim for now but all the FPV is on the way...about 37 oz now...flies great with the 3530 1700 kv but Two have gone bad already in about 2 weeks of flying...everyday with a 7x6...so I want something with a bit more quality....I HAVE only been running a 3s also...only going by the numbers that cobra motor should work...have to wait for the 3mm prop adapter then I will know....I hope....I knew I should have went with the larger Shaft ....

Yes, Rocky was getting great results with that motor.
Way more efficient...

See the big burned up part between the servos.
I chopped it out.

Glued the two pieces of wing I had left together.
Fixed a whole lot of holes from prop strikes including a big one that was all the way through the wing (gorilla glue mixed with water).
Extreme taped, laminated and remounted the motor ( the only piece of electric that was reusable). Cut down the elevons. and rehinged 'em.

Fins and prop, servos and all electrics except for the battery mounted.
Time for some decoration, yeah- flames.
Cut out the battery slot dead last to get the CG spot on.

Notice I laid the servos on their sides like we do on the Widowmaker, turns out it wasn't necessary, I could have set them in standing straight up like we do on the Assassin.
So what I have ended up with here is a plane that is a little deeper in the chord, a little more sweep, slightly longer wingspan, a little thinner than an Assassin, and ready to go for combat.
Would it have been easier to just build a whole new plane, yeah probably, but I can't wait, this plane feels SOLID.
